Position overview Position title: Director of Instruction and Academic Affairs
Salary range: The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay determined by step at appointment. See the following table(s) for the current salary scale(s) for this position: The current base salary range for this position is $78,342-$152,604. 'Off-scale' salaries, which yield compensation that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Percent time: 100%

Anticipated start: As soon as April 2024. Exact start date negotiable.

Position duration: Through June 30, 2025. An annual renewal is based on budget and performance.

Position description

Berkeley Social Welfare develops effective multi-level scholars and practitioners committed to solving complex social problems; produces, disseminates and utilizes research to improve social-service delivery and policy through critical thinking and evidence-based knowledge; and prepares the next generation of social workers, researchers and teachers dedicated to serving the most vulnerable members of our society.

The School is seeking a full-time Director of Instruction and Academic Affairs/Academic Coordinator (AC) to provide academic administration for all academic programs, including our accredited Master's in Social Work (MSW) professional degree program, undergraduate major in Social Welfare, doctoral degree program, and graduate certificate programs. The AC will ensure that all curricula are designed and delivered according to mandated accreditation standards, Academic Senate regulations, and educational requirements leading to eligibility for professional licensure as a social worker in the state of California.

Responsibilities include:
Supervision

• Supervision of Practicum Director (~1 FTE who oversees ~3 FTE practica consultants and ~1 FTE administrative support)
• Student Services Director (~1 FTE who oversees ~2 FTE)
• Lecturers (~1.5 FTE)

Employee Management

• Hires and onboards lecturers and practica consultants according to School needs;
• Manages administrative processes for recruitment;
• Monitors performance of lecturers and practica consultants with reappointments and merit reviews in mind;
• Dotted line supervision (in coordination with the Dean's Office Staff) of the Student Services Director who directly oversees the UG & Admissions Advisor and MSW Graduate Student Affairs Officer.

Training
Supports the professional development of their direct reports and assures alignment between programmatic conditions, direct reports, and the instructional mission of the program overall.



Curricular Responsibilities

• Actively collaborates with faculty to recommend and implement policies, criteria, and procedures for efficient and effective delivery of the doctoral, masters, and bachelors, curriculum, including field practicum;
• Evaluates student learning and practicum setting effectiveness, at a programmatic level, congruent with Council on Social Work competencies.

Program Responsibilities

• Forecasts trends in field practica and determines programmatic response;
• Coordinate implementation of MSW Program Assessment Plan and report results as required by accrediting body; develop and administer data collection, and conduct analysis, and reporting of student learning outcome assessment protocols and tools; make recommendations for curriculum changes and instructional improvements based on assessment results;
• CSWE Reaccreditation Review (every 8 years) which includes: collaboration to write and submit self-study (especially section on 'explicit curriculum'), coordinate site visit, draft response to site visit report, prepare annual program outcomes assessment report for posting online per CSWE requirements (every two years)
• Assists in the recruitment, assignment, and orientation of temporary faculty (lecturers) and providing support and monitoring as needed, especially with technical assistance and policy guidance on course preparation, academic procedures, and departmental policies;
• Supports policy development and implementation and strategic planning for new and existing programs;
• In collaboration with Dean's Office staff, oversees the scheduling of courses and sections to be offered each term and oversees preparation and data entry of class schedules; managing and supporting the course evaluation process each term; including summers (i.e., development of summer course offerings; identify, recommend-for-hire, and orient summer teaching staff); reviews all syllabi for conformance with School-requirements;
• Functions as the designated departmental Course Contact for submitting Course Proposals to the Academic Senate for approval; review course outlines and route for approval as appropriate;
• Drafts annual teaching assignments; and
• Supports the preparation of major academic reviews as needed, including the Academic Program Review (per APR Guide, including development of timelines, drafting sections as appropriate, collects supplementary data as needed).

External Representation

• Acts as a representative of the Dean in meetings that are of regional and national strategic importance to social work education and/or social work professional development. (e.g., participates in meetings of regional and national field directors).

The incumbent will report directly to the Dean. The incumbent will also liaise with the School's academic program committees as needed, collaborate and coordinate with the Student Services Director as needed, and support the preparation of the Dean's annual service charges as appropriate.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

• A Master's Degree in Social Work, or equivalent international degree.
  Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
  
  
• A professional licensure as a clinical social worker (LCSW in California, or recognized international equivalent).
  
  
• At least two years of post-Master's practical social work experience and an established record in field education, especially competency based education;
  
  
• Experience in field internship placement, field education curriculum and seminars, developing and overseeing the implementation of various programs associated with the School;
  
  
• Managerial experience and proven success in the administrative oversight of complex academic programs;
  
  
• Project management experience, including the ability to design and use databases for tracking programmatic outcomes;
  
  
• Experience in training of social work pre-professionals and professionals in community-based and/or academic settings;
  
  
• Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain an up-to-date perspective both on social work practice and the dynamics of professional social work education;
  
  
• Demonstrated knowledge of Council on Social Work Accreditation standards;
  
  
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral) required;
  
  
• Demonstrated critical-thinking, problem solving, and business process improvement skills and ability to implement improvement strategies;
  
  
• The applicant should also be committed to the multiple goals of a public research university, in a diverse, multicultural urban environment;
  
  
• Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with community agencies and staff;
  
  
• The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a multiracial/multicultural student population being trained to serve communities of great diversity - in age, abilities, cultural background, race, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation - as demonstrated through knowledge of inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, training, professional advisement and comparable experience; and
  
  
• Demonstrated working knowledge of the trends in the social work profession and social work education.
