Communications Coordinator - Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research & Innovation

Job Summary
As part of the communications team in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation (OVCRI), the Communications Coordinator will help tell stories that showcase the research, innovation, and entrepreneurship at Illinois and the impact they have on our local community, the state, and beyond. The Communications Coordinator will gather, write, manage, and distribute these stories and messages across a range of communications platforms.
Duties & Responsibilities

Writing, content development
- Identify, research, interview, and write news and feature stories that elevate the impact of Illinois research and innovation, using language that is clear and compelling
- Gather and write short-form newsletter content highlighting research and innovation stories as well as programs, resources, and events across campus
- Develop brief announcements and notices for internal audiences (primarily researchers, innovators, and entrepreneurs across campus)
- Write and update website content that is clear, concise, and audience-focused
- Craft social media posts that compel audiences to read stories and visit webpages
- Understand and apply Illinois and OVCRI brand guidelines and communication strategies
- Maintain a consistent voice and tone
- Provide editing, proofreading, and quality assurance as needed

Communications coordination
- Develop production schedules and deadlines, coordinating communications projects from concept to execution
- Publish stories on the website; review and update webpage content
- Meet with OVCRI stakeholders to determine communication project needs
- Serve as a communications resource for OVCRI staff as needed
- Maintain social media platform and strategy
- Produce internal e-newsletter
- Promote events and support event communication
- Gather and organize information needed for campaigns, info graphics, and other projects

Collaboration
- Work closely with the OVCRI creative team to generate ideas and develop project concepts, approaches, and strategic plans
- Collaborate with colleagues in other OVCRI units, including proposal development, Research Park/entrepreneurship, corporate relations, research safety, and others
- Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with colleagues across campus, including marketing communications staff at the research institutes and colleges

Other
- Stay informed of emerging research and innovation topics and trends relevant to OVCRI audiences
- Supervise a student worker, including delegating work, providing guidance, and reviewing completed tasks

Minimum Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree in marketing, business administration, communications, public relations, English, journalism, radio/television broadcasting, web/digital media, or a related field
- Two (2) years of related professional experience in marketing, public relations, communications, brand management, or a related professional area.
- Demonstrated experience and ability to translate complex ideas into language understandable by a wide audience
- Demonstrated experience researching, shaping and drafting news stories and feature articles

Preferred Qualifications

- Three years' experience in a higher education communications position
- Demonstrated experience in communications and marketing strategy
- Demonstrated experience writing marketing and website copy
- Demonstrated experience in social media content and strategy
- Experience working with designers to develop promotional and marketing materials
- Project management experience

- Strong writing and editing skills
- Mastery of grammar, punctuation, and spelling; error-free clear, effective language
- Creative thinking and problem solving o Excellent organizational skills; detail oriented
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills
- Ability to work independently and exercise good judgement
- Ability to analyze and derive insight from data to inform decisions
- Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse, high-paced, team-based environment
- Ability to work on many projects simultaneously, under deadline
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5004 - Marketing Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close date. The minimum salary is $60,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Hybrid work options may be available for this position, with the ability to be on-site as needed. Work authorization is not available for this position.
