Northwest Youth Corps is hiring crew leaders for next summer to lead Indigenous youth crews working on conservation projects.
Tribal Stewards Crew Leaders lead, manage, and support conservation crews of Indigenous youth ages 15-19. Crews consist of approximately 9 youth members and 2 leaders. Youth members are students at Chemawa Indian School in Salem, OR, who choose to participate for the summer. Each of them has their own story, goals, and needs.
As a leader, you will be responsible for ensuring the physical and emotional welfare of your crew. You'll work together on hands-on, conservation-oriented projects on tribal, federal, state, and private lands, and facilitate short daily lessons with our accredited outdoor education curriculum.
This is hard work. You'll wake early on frosty mornings to get your crew started, and will camp in tents for the entire 8-week program with occasional days off. Projects are physically challenging; you'll train your crew to safely use hand tools to build trails, cut down invasive plants, and restore natural areas. The youth you work with will challenge you to be the best leader you can be, and you'll watch them grow as a team. This can be their first step into entering the professional world and making an impact on their own lands. If you are passionate about working outdoors with Indigenous youth, please apply.
Compensation:
$120 daily / $122 for WFR/WEMT certified applicants. $100/day training pay for first ~10 days. Crew leaders will likely earn approximately $7,000 over the season.
