Pharmacy Technician I - Veterinary Teaching Hospital Veterinary Teaching Hospital Job Summary Provide pharmaceutical support to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital Medication Dispensary, including inventory management.
Duties & Responsibilities - In accordance with established procedures, prepares drugs and medications based on prescriptions, both electronic and written, selecting the pharmaceutical or accessory from stock and counting, pouring, calculating, reconstituting, compounding, packaging, and labeling the product as required. Prepare and date intravenous fluids, ointments, capsules, liquids, and other preparations. Recognize the normal range of medication and initiate necessary corrective action. Package and prepare medications and supplies for mailing out.
- Courteously manage the internal Medication Dispensary window and client pick-up window. Fulfill responsibilities with client communication (in-person and/or phone calls) and process applicable transactions.
- Add charges to Ward Stock and process adjustments, as necessary.
- Assist with the management of stock and supplies. This includes but is not limited to physically stocking products in the Medication Dispensary as they arrive, removing expired products, and placing dispensary orders.
- Manage and assist with the stocking of the automated drug dispensing machines (Cubex).
- Assist with maintaining pharmaceutical inventory to ensure adequate and fresh supplies in the Medication Dispensary and automated dispensing machines throughout the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
- Check expiration dates at regular intervals and dispose of outdated inventory appropriately and according to established internal procedures and state and federal regulations.
- Utilizing internal database systems, check inventory levels against target supply levels and order pharmaceuticals as necessary using hospital and university systems. Adjust target supply levels based on input from Pharmacist(s) and seasonal needs or changes in usage over a period of time.
- Receive, process (count, enter in system, label & price) and store pharmaceuticals and related items in the Medication Dispensary and automated dispensing systems. Ensure that storage adheres to the manufacturer's recommended conditions such as temperature and humidity levels.
- Filing, labeling, and organizing dispensary documents and products as directed. Maintain cleanliness of the Medication Dispensary area and equipment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned. Additional Physical Demands
Employee will spend many hours in a stationary position and working at counters, tables, and shelving. Position involves moving large containers or shipment boxes that weigh upwards of 50 pounds to stock shelves or move supplies. Handles glassware and medications stored in glass. The Medication Dispensary is located in a Veterinary Teaching Hospital and allergies to animal dander and hay or straw may cause discomfort.
Minimum Qualifications 1. Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the State of Illinois.
2. Any one of the following that equals six (6)months:
A. Successful completion of a formal training program in technical, non-professional pharmaceutical procedures and practices.
OR
B. Work experience in technical, non-professional pharmaceutical procedures and practices. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of pharmaceutical classification of drugs and dosage ranges as it relates to veterinary medicine
- Knowledge of pharmacy and controlled substances federal and state laws and regulations
- Knowledge of rules governing shipment of biological products
- Knowledge of hospital pharmaceutical protocols
- Knowledge of processes and procedures for maintaining inventory, including knowledge of medication supply sources (ordering, storage, etc.)
- Skill in calculating and preparing pharmaceuticals or parenterals.
- Ability to multi-task efficiently, demonstrate time management skills, and excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to show personal accountability and dedication to optimal unit performance.
- Ability to work calmly and professionally under a high-demand work environment
- Computer and data entry skills.
Appointment Information This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 4058 - Pharmacy Technician I position, appointed on a 12-month basis.
