CHAIR, DEPARTMENT OF OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY

UNIVERSITY OF IOWA, ROY J. AND LUCILLE A. CARVER COLLEGE OF MEDICINE

The Carver College of Medicine at The University of Iowa seeks candidates for the Chair and Department Executive Officer position within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The College is surveyed by U.S. News and World Reports and the National Institutes of Health for research funding. The Carver College of Medicine and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics are equal partners within UI Health Care, and the hospital is one of the largest university-owned teaching hospitals in the United States. To meet the growing demand for world-class health care in the State of Iowa, the University of Iowa Health Care (UIHC) has embarked on a significant expansion of clinical, research, and education programs and facilities. The University is located in Iowa City, a vibrant community in southeastern Iowa’s rolling hills. The community offers excellent schools, quality entertainment, literary, musical, and cultural opportunities, and Big 10 sporting events.

The UI Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has a distinguished clinical, research, and teaching faculty who are national and international leaders in their respective areas of expertise. The department encompasses diverse programs spanning all areas of the specialty.   The department is also the home of an excellent residency program with 6 residents per year and highly competitive fellowship programs in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Gyn Oncology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, and Urogynecology. The department has active preeclampsia, gynecologic cancers, pelvic floor disorders, and infertility research programs. Partnering with the State of Iowa, the Department has expanded residency and fellowship training to rural Iowa in partnership with several Iowa health systems and clinics. Additionally, the department’s residency program has many years of recruiting and graduating outstanding women’s health talent. In addition, the department closely collaborates with the UI Departments of Urology, Psychiatry, Family Medicine, the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center (Iowa’s only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center), and the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics as well as the University of Iowa’s Stead Family Children’s Hospital.

Distinguished teaching, research, and clinical faculty comprise the department. Among these include several outstanding faculty who are national and international leaders in their respective subspecialties and research areas.  This is equally balanced with experienced, skilled senior members and energetic, creative junior faculty members collaborating on patient care, research, and education.

The department chair is the leader of all aspects of the department’s enterprise, serves as the spokesperson for the faculty, and represents the department throughout the college, UI Health Care, and practitioners throughout the state and nationally. Responsibilities include faculty recruitment and appointments; educational, clinical, and research programs; fiscal planning and management; and short- and long-term strategic planning.

Education Requirement:

Board Certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology and licensure or eligibility for licensure in Iowa. 

Required Qualifications:

• Board Certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology and licensure or eligibility for licensure in Iowa. 



• Progressive administrative leadership experience in an academic medical center environment and department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.



• A national and/or international reputation for achievement in clinical, educational, and/or research pursuits that would warrant a tenured appointment.



• Record of accomplishment for developing research infrastructure.



• Engagement in active clinical practice.



• Excellent strategic skills, administrative experience, and financial acumen.



• A minimum of five years of demonstrated leadership achievement in a large volume, high-performing, contemporary department with comparable complexity to the UI Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.



• Demonstrated experience promotiong human rights and equality



• Excellent communication skills and demonstrated interpersonal skills, allowing for transparency, respect, effective problem resolution, and ethical decision-making. 



• A successful track record of mentorship and accountability.

Desirable Qualifications:

• Strategic thinker who thinks creatively in a dynamic marketplace and within health care that may require flexibility to change direction in response to these market dynamics.



• An open and direct communication style. A collegial presence that encourages consensus building, collaboration, and cooperation.

• A track record of running a financially successful clinical operation.
