Job Description

SUMMARY:

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor in athletic department is responsible for the therapeutic care, injury prevention, and rehabilitative treatments of student- athletes. The Athletic Trainer is also responsible for developing and educating athletic training students. The Athletic Trainer is the first responder in emergency situations involving the student-athlete, performs immediate treatment and care of injuries, makes decisions regarding and coordinates medical referral when necessary, organizes and tracks insurance information, performs extended treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries and makes decisions regarding return to play.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Evaluate and treat injuries and illnesses; administer emergency first aid to student-athletes; refer injured student-athletes to a physician according to established procedures.

Administer rehabilitative treatment to student-athletes under the direction of a physician; operate a variety of therapeutic modalities such as whirlpool and ultrasound, therapeutic exercise and other modalities;

Establish and maintain communication with coaches of condition and availability of injured student-athletes.

Attend athletic events as assigned and administer emergency first aid treatment, assess and treat injuries as necessary. Prepare student-athletes for practice and games.

Counsel student-athletes regarding injury care, prevention and treatment programs.

Establish and maintain accurate records and reports including injury and insurance reports and detailed records concerning injuries, treatment and other health matters.

Process insurance claim forms for athletic injuries as required.

Organize and supervise mass pre-participation physical examinations for college athletic teams with team physicians as required by the CCCAA.

Develop and maintain current Emergency Action Plan (EAP) for all athletic competition locations; educate administrators/coaches etc. on EAP procedures.

Follow established safety standards and regulations to reduce injury risks of the student-athletes and liability of the department and college.

Oversees management of inventory control system and purchasing for all supplies and equipment. Monitor appropriate requisitions for supplies and equipment through established department procedures.

Other duties as assigned.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:

Train and provide work direction to athletic training students and assigned helpers as required.

Create an open line of communication with team physicians, Student Health Services, athletic academic counselors, dentists, podiatrists, acupuncturists, chiropractor, massage therapist, athletic trainers and physical therapists, other health care professionals, coaches, administrators, and student-athletes.

Assist in the preparation of departmental budget as required.

As a member of the Athletics department, actively participate in strategic planning, and participate in formulating, evaluating, interpreting and enforcing department policies.

Attend related workshops, in-service training and conferences to stay current in all certifications and aware of any changes in the application of athletic training room services.

Any combination equivalent to: A bachelor's degree in physical education, athletic training, or completion of an entry level Master's program in athletic training AND two years of experience as an athletic trainer. A Master's degree in athletic training or completion of entry level doctorate program in athletic training preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:


Indoor and outdoor environment; subject to inclement weather, traveling to athletic games and lifting a maximum of 50 pounds.
