Job Summary
The Archaeology Instructor will develop, refine, and implement year-round Tribal Archaeology learning opportunities as part of the Yaghanen K-12 culture and language programs. This person will instruct in a classroom setting, as well as field settings. The Tribal Archaeology Instructor will collaborate closely with local education agencies, and federal land agencies to provide relevant hands-on learning experiences that reflect Kenaitze Indian Tribe's core values.
Essential Functions
- Implement Tribal Archaeology programs focusing on Kenaitze core values, Dena'ina culture, heritage, and language
- Refine, and update existing approved curriculum, assessments, and learning materials
- Collaborate with KPBSD and KPC to ensure accreditation, curriculum alignment, and assessment
- Lead Archaeology summer field school for youth ages 14-17
- Instruct youth in introductory Dena'ina Archaeology through Yaghanen K-12 programs
- Collaborate with Kenaitze Tribal Archaeologist to provide culturally relevant and responsive programming
- Work as a team member with Yaghanen staff as well as other Departments of the Tribe as directed to insure cultural programming is appropriately reflected in all tribal programs
- Responsible for proactive family communication and record management for Yaghanen
- Responsible for transporting youth and items (including lifting & driving) for Yaghanen programs
- Model appropriate behavior for youth
- Ensures compliance with Tribal, federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, Tribal policies and TERO ordinance

Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, or related field, or a combination of education and experience may be substituted for degree
Experience
- One (1) year working with youth in an instructional setting
- One (1) year working at archaeology field sites
Preferred
- Background in Dena'ina Language and Culture
- Knowledge and experience working with cultural diversities
License/Certification
- Must have a valid Alaska State driver's license and must remain insurable under the Tribe's policy
- Must have Pediatric-Adult CPR & First Aid, or be obtained within 30 days
Special Skills
- Ability to multi-task, work independently, and meet deadlines
- Knowledge and experience with Kenai peninsula climate, topography, and back country survival
- Creative, energetic, motivated approach to achieving goals
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work a varied work schedule, travel to events and camps
- Proficiency with Microsoft Suite, or obtain training within 90 days of hire
- Conducts business in a service-oriented manner that is attentive, pleasant, respectful and kind when dealing with un'ina, visitors, co-workers and others
This position is a Covered Position subject to all requirements of the Alaska Barrier Crimes Act (ABCA) and to the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, (ICPA). ABCA and ICPA requirements apply and must be complied with at all times in order to remain in the position.
