Under general direction of AYS Director/ AYS Assistant Director; plans, coordinates, conducts, and supervises the activities and operation of a full day summer program for children in grades 6-8. This positions is responsible to the Andover Youth Services (AYS) Director & the AYS Assistant Director.
Responsibilities - Supervises program staff and manages staff schedule.
- Makes sure staff arrive on time and leave when they are scheduled to leave.
- Communicate and plan for scheduling adjustments.
- Serve as direct point of contact for staff or program related incidents.
- Ensure activities taking place are running safe and appropriately.
- Oversee all applicable AYS policies and procedures; provides structure for appropriate conduct.
- Assists in planning and coordinating a comprehensive summer program schedule that includes, but is not limited to activities such as: arts and crafts, games, sports, outdoor recreation, etc.
- Creates t hemes for Outer Limit weeks that will be followed and executed by full time staff.
- Plan and coordinate activities related to the weekly themes. Reviews plans during weekly team meetings for the next upcoming program week.
- Demonstrate adaptability, adjusting activities/programming to align with program's scheduling and staffing needs.
- Provide menu of alternative activities in accordance with physical space or material limitations.
- Oversees and supervises program staff in the performance of specific duties.
- Sets performance standards in partnership with the AYS Director and AYS Assistant Director.
- Provides ongoing feedback to staff with relevance to the established performance standards.
- Completion of incident reports as needed.
- Trains program staff in icebreakers activities, games, and other activities appropriate to the participants' age range.
- Prepares and facilitates ice breaker games and activities during staff training and during regular weekly programing.
- Build a binder of activities that can be kept in the lobby for staff reference.
- Prepares daily schedules, attendance, other records and reports as requested.
- Coordinate morning and afternoon check-in/pick-up.
- Print and complete check-in/afternoon/pick-up attendance.
- Verify approval and record early dismissals.
- Contact families if attendees are absent.
- Keep track of medication that youth may need and implement inclusion plans to remind youth who need to take medication during the day.
- Review participant intake information to ensure that parents provide proper documentation for medications.
- Utilize participant intake forms and inclusion plans to develop common language and plans with staff to ensure that youth have access to necessary supports.
- Distribute incident reports to AYS Director and Assistant Director daily, promptly communicating with families as necessary .
- Align staffing to designated areas and activities.
- Monitor progress of staff leading activities and programs and provide feedback as necessary.
- Communicate effectively with caregivers.
- Enforce all regulations pertaining to the health and safety of visitors, parents, and participants.
- Responsible for the care and maintenance of equipment, shuttles and CYC facility.
- Assign cleaning duties to staff and participants as necessary.
- Administers First Aid as necessary.
- Ensures all safety and emergency procedures are followed by staff.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications - Preferred age of applicants to be 21 years of age or older and have at least two years of experience working with children, preferably in a summer program setting.
- Prior experience in a leadership position required.
- P rior experience with children of all abilities.
- Ability to establish an effective working relationship with parents, employees, and the public.
- Experience in coordinating, planning, organizing, and implementing activities for children is required.
- Ability to provide alternatives/modified activities for children of all abilities.
- Current CPR/First Aid Certification is required.
- Emphasis will be placed on ability to develop and implement a variety of creative activities on a consistent basis.
- Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records regarding participants' vital statistics, reports , and attendance.
- Ability to work in various environments during the summer. Subject to inclement weather and extremes in temperature.
- Bachelor's Degree in Recreation or Education preferred.
Supplemental Information - Possession of a valid Massachusetts Driver's License.
- Identify and respond to hazards and traumatic events.
- Work with different age and skill levels.
- Assist in emergency situations.
- Requires substantial physical strength, stamina , and agility to participate in one to multiday outdoor activities, such as backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, rock climbing or mountain biking.
- Duties require periods of heavy lifting and physical activity.
