Job description
Hybrid: Position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time, but the general expectation is that the employee be onsite at minimum three (3) days each week.
The Role
This role will work within GM Motorsports to lead a group focused on Performance Engineering support of Indycar program. This group is responsible for driving on-track performance improvements through guiding long-term vehicle development directions and providing event specific vehicle configuration, setup, and strategy recommendations to supported race teams. Long-term development is supported through competitor analysis, performance metrics refinement, simulation model correlation, and derivation of improved analysis methods while event specific analysis employs greater use of existing simulation tools/methods to find optima and derive insight through interrogation of prior event timing data and logged track data. As the group lead, you will provide a key contribution to innovation, setting group priorities, establishing group culture, managing team workload, and building productive relationships with race team partners as well key stakeholders internal and external to GM motorsports. Role will require limited travel to test and race events. This position is open to international hiring.
What You’ll do
Lead GM Motorsports Performance Engineering IndyCar focused support group
Collaborate with GM supported teams and GM personnel to define group priorities, coordinate team efforts, and effectively integrate work product into performance gains on-track
Guide group’s technical direction drawing from motorsports experience, vehicle dynamics knowledge, and insight from latest advances within the industry
Engage greater Motorsports Performance Group to share innovations and foster cross-series collaboration
Actively engage in team’s technical projects
Work closely with GM software group to implement prototype methods into production tools
Develop a relaxed, collaborative, and highly productive team environment
Periodically travel to race and test events to support on-track activity

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related subject
8+ years of experience in a top-level motorsports series including IndyCar, F1, NASCAR, IMSA, WEC, or similar
Intimate knowledge of simulation workflows in a professional motorsports organization including offline simulation and DIL. Demonstrated experience using simulation tools to optimize vehicle performance
Proficient programing in python, MATLAB, or similar language
Extensive experience analyzing on-track performance and deriving actionable recommendations through application vehicle dynamics principles and statistical methods
Proven experience building and managing a highly motivated, high output team
Exceptional ability to foster collaboration and navigate relationships with a variety of external partners
Strong organization skills, exceptional work ethic, a forward-thinking mentality, and a superb attention to detail
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
Master’s Degree in Engineering, Physics, or related subject
Race Engineering experience in IndyCar, F1, or Formula E with intimate knowledge of race car setup, event preparation, technical inspection, race procedures and race strategy
Proficiency in Motorsports data analysis software including Pi Toolbox, Atlas, Motec or similar
Knowledge and experience in tire modeling, construction, testing, and validation
Experience with aerodynamic testing and applying physical and/or CFD results to vehicle modeling tools for on-track performance optimization
Familiarity with vehicle testing methods and data reduction from on-track testing, SPMM, and 7-post
