Job description
The Office of Marketing and Communications invited students to submit entries to the 2024 J-Term Photo/Video Contest. Entries captured a wide variety of experiences students enjoyed during J-Term. With nearly 50 submissions to the contest, we are excited to announce the winners!
Carthage students studied across the globe in January! These photos give us a peek into the places they explored!
Grace completed a Lifestyle Travel Photography Independent Study while traveling with students on the Sports Journalism tour. This photo was taken inside The Colosseum in Rome. The photo is of Kaylee Smith ’26 who joined Grace on the tour of Europe.
In Kasey’s photo, Carthage students (Gloria Castro-Jimenez ’24, Tyler Kelly ’24, Armstrong ’25, Brooke Dixon ’25, and Phillip Hunter ’24) had to hike to the top of the Cape of Good Hope lookout. This is the most southern point in South Africa, where they participated in the Service Learning in Communities study tour.
As part of the Photographing Biodiversity in Costa Rica study tour, Emily snapped a picture of the green-breasted mango hummingbird in flight while in the lowlands of Costa Rica.
Lauren shared that this photo was taken during an early morning safari at the Bayala Game Reserve in South Africa. Students on the Service Learning in Communities in South Africa study tour had stopped to overlook the beautiful African landscape. She asked a friend to take a quick photo with the African savanna in the background. Out of nowhere, a beautiful butterfly, native to South Africa, flew into frame. She says, “This photo is extremely special, for it captures how freeing and beautiful the trip was.”
Students captured the learning experience in the classroom and field experience happening here on campus.
During a chemistry lab for Experimental Physics, Andrew and Sophie studied the Rubens tube. They explain, “The Rubens tube allows the wave-nature of sound to be visualized with propane escaping through the tube’s drilled holes that is externally lit on fire. We built this in our Experimental Physics class to measure the speed of sound in propane. The tube has frequencies it ‘likes’ to vibrate at so when an audio signal matches one of those frequencies, a standing pressure wave is created inside of the tube, causing the propane to rush out of the tube’s holes in a way that reflects the pressure wave. When this escaping propane is lit on fire, you get a pretty standing wave of fire, as is shown in the picture.”
Outside of the classroom, January on campus is a winter lover’s paradise! Lauren took a break from studying Cancer Biology to make a miniature snowman outside The Tower with friends Abby Trcka ’27, Alexa Medendorp ’27, and Victoria Bacon ’27.
This category asked for a 30-60-second video of an event or activity that happened during J-Term.
Alexis traveled to Greece for International Legal Environment and Business in the European Union saying, “This video highlights our trip to Greece where we explored Athens and the Peloponnesus region. This video shows the great sights and historic areas of Greece!”
As part of the study tour Writers in Context: Jane Austen’s Persuasion, Leela captured many of the cool things her J-Term group encountered in England. Under the leadership of Professor David García, the group spent one week in Bath and one week in London.
Jayln Green ’27 – I was working on a video for my J-Term class with my camera and I decided to take some pictures as well, I liked the pictures a lot and I edited the pictures.
