THE OPPORTUNITY 

Pleasant Valley Community Church is a pastor-led, Gospel-centered church that exists to saturate Owensboro and engage the nations with the glory and knowledge of the Lord. While being driven by a deep missional passion, PVCC prioritizes the health and soul-care of its leaders and their families. Starting with a core group of 25 people over 17 years ago, Pleasant Valley Community Church has been committed to Knowing God and Making God Known Together as they focus on discipleship and multiplication for the glory of God.  Over the years, PVCC has grown to a weekly attendance of 800-900 people.   PVCC has planted three churches in the region, and has raised up and sent out three international missionaries to long-term assignments over the last four years. Pleasant Valley is a member of the Harbor (formerly Sojourn) Network.

Pleasant Valley Community Church is looking for a Director (Pastor) of Adult Discipleship and Missions who will help shepherd the people of PVCC through developing a culture of deep discipleship, authentic community, and missional fervor as we live out our mission of Knowing God and Making God Known Together.

THE COMMUNITY 

Pleasant Valley is located in Owensboro, Kentucky, a riverfront town known for its unique blend of smaller-town life and a thriving art and culture scene.  A town of 60,000 people, Owensboro boasts world-class amenities including a revitalized downtown and riverfront park that is consistently named on top-10 lists from publications like USA Today.  Live music can be heard along the riverfront nightly in the warmer months, especially outside the International Bluegrass Museum. Owensboro is the birthplace of Bluegrass music and mutton barbecue.  

Ellie Mae and Business Insider named Owensboro as one of the top 11 cities in the country where millennials are moving. This is largely due to the growing number of businesses that are relocating to the community to take advantage of the extremely affordable housing, great schools, family-friendly culture, and proximity to larger cities like Louisville, Nashville, and St. Louis.  The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary is just an hour and a half drive away in Louisville, and you can be in Nashville in under two hours.  Politically, the city leans conservative. There is a strong Catholic presence that has shaped the religious background of many people there, three college campuses, and a growing foreign refugee community which all present a tremendous opportunity for the Gospel.

THE ROLE

Summary:  To fulfill the mission of Pleasant Valley Community Church through developing a culture of discipleship, authentic community, and mission.

Adult Discipleship

Purpose: To develop a culture of discipleship and genuine community among the body of Christ of PVCC.

The Director of Adult Discipleship and Missions will ensure the strategic and successful implementation of PVCC’s vision for thriving small group ministries and discipleship groups. Operational responsibility includes, but is not limited to, planning, recruitment, leadership development, communication, and general administration within group ministry. He will consult with the Pastoral Team on a regular basis and will lead the execution of specific church-wide projects and initiatives on behalf of the Pastoral Team that pertain to adult discipleship.

Missions

Purpose: To help lead PVCC in its vision of saturating Owensboro and engaging the nations with the glory and knowledge of the Lord.

The Director of Adult Discipleship and Missions will oversee PVCC’s relationships with and care for our international missionary partners, including planning mission trips to support and encourage these partners. Additionally, this position will seek to lead and help develop a strategic plan for PVCC to send out four additional international missionaries and three North American church planters in the next 15 years. This may include helping oversee PVCC’s future vision of establishing a residency program for future pastors and/or church planters. He will also develop a plan to make Community Groups intentionally evangelistic, while working alongside PVCC’s Director of Mercy Ministry to cultivate ongoing evangelistic opportunities locally.

General

Along with the other pastors at PVCC, the Director of Adult Discipleship and Missions generally shepherds the people of God at PVCC by assuming other typical pastoral duties (coaching, leadership development, discipleship, teaching, hospital visitations, counseling, evangelism, etc).

The Pastor of Adult Discipleship and Missions serves alongside the Pastoral Team and reports to PVCC’s Executive Pastor.  This is a full-time position (typically 40-45 hours per week), which includes regular office hours, Sunday worship gatherings, and other ministry events on nights and weekends.

*It is anticipated that the title of “Director” will change to “Pastor” following a season of examination and the recommendation of the congregation and Pastoral Team.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• Prayerfully seek God and the leadership of the Holy Spirit, making extended times of prayer a priority.
• Attend Pastoral Team and Staff Meetings, and other meetings as necessary.
• Prepare an annual ministry plan to present to the Executive Pastor. 
• Be available for the public reading of Scripture, prayers, and teaching/preaching.
• Share responsibility (along with other pastors) of conducting membership and baptism interviews, and following up with guests to PVCC on a weekly basis.
• Efficiently manage the budgets for adult discipleship ministries and missions.
• Attend conferences and trainings for continued education.
• Develop and implement evaluation and measurement for each ministry under adult discipleship and missions.
• Other duties as assigned.

SPECIFIC TASKS

Small Group & D-Group Discipleship

• Create and oversee a community group and discipleship group (D-Group) leader/coach development concept.
• Work with the Directional Team to ensure successful church-wide campaigns, small group connection events and mid-size events that introduce the congregation to community life and discipleship.
• Conduct evaluations of group leaders and coaches.
• Research/implement/develop content for group gatherings.
• Ensure that groups remain missions-minded with a heart for evangelism.

Classes

• Create and implement classes to serve the body of Christ (including but not limited to Sunday School Classes, care groups, new believer classes, and serving as the liaison with the Lead Pastor for Valley Theological Intensives).

Missions

• Develop a system to provide care and support for the missionaries we support abroad.
• Work with each missionary to develop a plan for how PVCC can best support their work, which may include leading trips as needed.
• Develop a strategy to engage the body of Pleasant Valley in mission, including personal evangelism, group outreach, working alongside the Director of Mercy Ministry for local outreach, and organizing mission trips.
• Regularly communicate needs and celebrate wins with the Pastoral Team, PVCC Staff, and overall congregation as it relates to our foreign and domestic missions partnerships.

THE QUALIFICATIONS 

• Fulfill the duties of a PVCC member as outlined in the membership covenant.
• Fulfill the character qualifications of a pastor as taught in Scripture (1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9).
• Personal and professional commitment to seeing Jesus’ mission fulfilled through the local church, including a clear calling to vocational service in the local church as a pastor. (Matt. 28:18-20, John 20:21, and Acts 1:8).
• Personal commitment to vision, mission, and values of PVCC.
• High capacity for work and responsibility as well as the ability to appropriately prioritize and delegate.
• Proven track record in organizational leadership, including the ability to build and lead teams and develop and lead leaders.
• A proven track record of being a self-starter, entrepreneur, and goal-oriented worker, with a strong work ethic.
• Professional-level skills, expertise, and experience with people, business, legal, and financial management; ability to maintain high levels of confidentiality.
• Willingness to work as an often-unseen member of the PVCC leadership team.
• Willingness to take appropriate risk as a means of stewarding the resources God gives PVCC to advance the gospel through both PVCC and the planting of new churches.
• Exhibits discretion, perseverance, patience, and flexibility.
• Ability to tactfully interface with a diverse group of people.
• Ability to resolve conflict in a productive and gracious manner; ability to take direction & feedback.
• Ability to recruit, manage, & encourage volunteers; collaborative & team focused.
• Self-motivated and ability to multi-task.
• Humble commitment to continually learn, grow, and improve as a servant in Jesus’ church.
• Familiarity and agreement with some aspects of Reformed theology and the missional church movement, as well as openness and expectancy toward the work of the Holy Spirit in both theology and practice.
• Minimum of three years’ experience in business, ministry, or church is desired.
