Provide a variety of limited research duties supporting the laboratory in conducting visual behavior and neurophysiology studies. Responsibilities will include: providing daily behavioral trials and health monitoring of rats and/or mice during behavioral testing in both in-cage and in-laboratory behavioral tasks. Calibration and maintenance of behavioral apparatus according to standard operating procedures.
Assisting in survival surgery and post-operative care including administration of medications. Perfusion and histological preparation of brain tissue. Serve as lab administrator responsible for lab safety, inventory, documentation, security and regulatory compliance. Additional duties will include assistance with record keeping; data entry and generation of reports. Perform other duties as assigned.
Theoretical knowledge of Neuroscience, Biology, Physiology, Pharmacology or Cognitive Science; BA or BS in Biology, Physiology or Neuroscience, or an equivalent combination of education and laboratory experience.
Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory research surgical protocols. Knowledge of surgical prep skills, including shave, scrub, and cut down of tissue.
Familiarity with Federal guidelines for Good Laboratory Practices for humane use of animals. Knowledge of research animal care protocols and procedures as defined by AAALAC, AALAS, University of California and other governmental agencies. Demonstrated use of sensitivity to the humane care of animals in research.
Skill administering medications to rodents including subcutaneous and intraperitoneal injections.
Skills to test and record responses to assess depth of anesthesia; determine and establish stable maintenance dosage of anesthesia. Knowledge of normal and abnormal physiological data in rodents during anesthesia and surgery.
Skill and knowledge for monitoring of health and verifying adequate hydration in water-restricted animal subjects. Postoperative care of rodents including monitoring for pain, distress, infection and treatment.
Skill and knowledge to set up, maintain, and troubleshoot surgical apparatus and lab equipment, such as microscopes, microtomes, glass bead sterilizer, surgical drills, and anesthesia vaporizers and scavengers.
Skill in behavioral training of rodents.
Skill in calibration, maintenance and operation of computerized apparatus for visual stimulus presentation and liquid reward delivery in animal behavior experiments.
Skill and knowledge in brain histology including perfusion, extraction, fixation, slicing, mounting, staining, and coverslipping whole brains.
Knowledge of laboratory safety rules and regulations, Material and Safety Data Sheets, and laboratory safety precautions, including safe handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals, radioisotopes, biologicals, and the use of lab safety equipment; familiarity with campus safety procedures.
Ability to oversee laboratory safety including safe handling of surgical instruments and management of controlled substances.
Excellent interpersonal communications and English language skills both verbal and written, including skill to understand and carry out written and oral instructions and interact with diverse personalities. Demonstrated ability to successfully and positively work with a team.
Demonstrated skills using MS Word, Excel, and other PC software.
Demonstrated concentration skill to meet multiple deadlines and deal with interruptions and changing priorities.
Demonstrated skill to prioritize and organize workload.
Demonstrated organizational skills to keep complete, concise records, including lab budget for expenses and computing financial needs.
Must be willing and able to work with rodents as experimental model.
Must be willing and able to work safely with surgical instruments & controlled substances.
Good hand/eye coordination and surgical skills and knowledge for fine dissection, etc.
