SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER

Summary Description

Under general direction of the Principal and Coordinator of School Counseling, the School Social Worker will seek to address barriers to academic success that may exist within the child, home, school, and/or community. School social workers take a strengths-based approach to assessment and seek to intervene across the many systems that interface in the life of a child. By providing intervention strategies and direct services to students and their families, such as screening and assessment, case management, referral and linkage with community resources, crisis intervention and support, as well as individual or group counseling, the School Social Worker will support the mission and goals of the school district in regard to facilitating academic success for all students. School social work services are culturally appropriate and respect the diverse environmental contexts, characteristics, and experiences of the students and families of Washoe County.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Experience: Any combination of education/experience that could likely provide the required knowledge in qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

Education: Bachelor's Degree or a more advanced degree in social work from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

Experience: Three years of social work related experience or experience working with youth or youth serving organizations

Licenses/Certificates: Possession of, or the ability to obtain a valid Nevada teaching license with a school social worker endorsement. Hold a current license issued by the Board of Examiners for Social Workers or hold a current equivalent license issued by a similar agency in another state and agree to obtain a license issued by the Board of Examiners for Social Workers within 1 year after the date on which the person applied for an endorsement NAC 391.320  Endorsement to serve as social worker. ( NRS 385.080 , 391.019 )

Preferred Qualifications

Three (3) years of experience in social work with children is desirable.

Teacher's Salary Schedule

Salaries are subject to adjustment and may increase and decrease each fiscal year.

The Washoe County School District pays an additional legislatively-designated amount to the Public Employees Retirement System on behalf of the employee for retirement benefits. No retirement contribution is made by the employee.

New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.

Please be advised there is a 90-day waiting period for insurance benefits. Benefits are paid by employees at a prorated percent for those working less than full time.
