The Department of Neurology at UT Southwestern Medical Center is a nationally recognized leader in the comprehensive management of neurological conditions. Our vibrant department comprises more than 75 full-time faculty in 12 subspecialty sections, supporting a spectrum of complex and innovative approaches to neurological care, a broad range of novel research programs, and a panoply of educational opportunities for trainees. The department offers access to the latest innovative treatments in one of the most rapidly advancing fields of medicine and features an Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center and a Level-4 NEAC Epilepsy Center. Through collaborations with the O’Donnell Brain Institute, the department is building state-of-the art facilities for drug and device testing and bringing current and new faculty together for collaborative research on brain disease therapy.

Job Summary

This position is available in a basic research laboratory within the Neurology Department with secondary affiliation with the Center for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases (CAND). We are looking for an enthusiastic and responsible Research Technician to support ongoing projects in the lab employing mouse breeding, husbandry and genotyping and advanced mouse experiments such as induction and monitoring of EAE (Experimental Autoimmune Encephalitis), intracranial injections, brain dissection, immunophenotyping with flow cytometry, and cell seeding experiments with mouse brain tissue.

Laboratory Expectations

· Responsible for general lab management, including ordering and inventory, general reagent preparation, autoclaving, and dishwashing.

· Experience with mouse breeding and genetics as well as basic word processing and spreadsheet computer skills are required.

· Experience with mouse surgeries, immunological studies, tissue preparation and cell culture assays are preferred however not required.

· Efficient organizational skills, attention to detail, accurate record keeping, effective communication skills, and ability to work independently and efficiently are a must.

We have a highly skilled team of research staff members who can provide the necessary training to acquire more advanced skills for conducting mouse studies. Applicants should be comfortable with the prospects of experiments involving mice. A commitment of 3 years is highly encouraged.

Experience and Education

· Completion of two (2) years of college or specialized training in histology, medical technology, or relevant field and one (1) year experience as Laboratory Technical Assistant or equivalent. or

· High school graduation including courses in basic sciences such as physics, chemistry, biology, etc., and three (3) years of laboratory experience including two years as Laboratory Technical Assistant or equivalent.

Job Duties

Assists in conducting experiments and working on research problems in such fields as physiology, bacteriology, tissue culture, chemistry, and other related fields by performing basic, routine, and least complex procedures as prescribed by supervisor.

· Assembles and/or operates various laboratory equipment and apparatus.

· Records resulting data in accordance with established methods. Confers with supervisor concerning results obtained and modifies procedures in accordance with instruction of supervisor.

· Performs other duties as assigned.
