Chief Objective of Position:

The Residential Fellow will support the Office of Residence Life in its mission to create a safe and inclusive community for all students that complements the educational mission of the University. Reporting to an Assistant Director for Residence Life, the Residential Fellow will provide ongoing support for all residential students, student staff, and professional staff. This position requires an on-call duty rotation including after hours, weekends, and university holidays/academic breaks. While serving on call, the Residential Fellow will need to remain within a 15-minute response time from campus with reliable transportation. Additional support may be needed during university holidays/academic breaks in case of emergency. This is a required live-in, 12-month position (June 1, 2024 – May 31, 2025). Upon mutual agreement, Residence Life may extend a contract for one additional year (May 31, 2026).

This position is open to December 2023 or May 2024 graduates of Christopher Newport University.

Work Tasks:

  • Assist in the day to day supervision and support of student staff to include: Resident Assistants (RAs), front desk assistants (FDAs), and a Senior Resident Assistant.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of August and December Resident Assistant and Front Desk Assistant Training along with informal training throughout the year.
  • Facilitate weekly staff meetings for Resident Assistants and individual meetings on a regular basis.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for day-to-day operational needs of designated residential community.
  • Plan and execute the Residential Community Connection Plan (residential curriculum) to foster an engaging and educational living and learning environment for staff and students.
  • Support the planning of programs and events for residential students with student staff members.
  • Mediate and address conflict involving roommates, staff, and residential communities.
  • Provide campus resources to students and make referrals to campus resources as appropriate.
  • Serve on an on-call rotation, providing support to residents and student staff members. On-call includes after hours, weekends, and university holidays/academic breaks.
  • Serve as a hearing officer in collaboration with the Center for Honor Enrichment and Community Standards (CHECS), adjudicating cases involving lower level violations.
  • Participate in departmental processes including but not limited to openings, closings, staff recruitment, and staff training.
  • Report facilities-related concerns to University Housing and assist with student support-and follow-up – including occupancy management-related responsibilities.
  • Assist Residence Life summer operations, including supervision of summer student staff members (Residential Desk Assistants), provide support for the closing of ten and twelve-month occupancy spaces, and preparing for the fall move-in process.
  • Provides support to the Residence Hall Association (RHA).
  • Assist and provide support for University-wide programs to include Setting Sail (First-Year Orientation), Changing Tides (Transfer Student Orientation), Move-In, Welcome Week, Freshman Dessert Receptions, Pancake Breakfast, May Commencement Activities, admissions events, and other university events as requested.
  • Promote the mission of Christopher Newport University and adhere to all departmental policies and procedures and support additional University programs that enhance the overall experience for students, as approved by their supervisor. This may include, but is not limited to Signing Day, Senior Week, Commencement activities, and Admission events.
