Purchasing Manager
MAGNITUDE OF POSITION:
The Purchasing managers must be strong leaders, be good decision-makers, and have excellent negotiation skills to secure purchases at the best prices and terms. They need good communication skills in dealing with internal management and outside suppliers and vendors. The purchasing manager's responsibilities include developing strategies, maintaining positive relationships with suppliers, coordinating with internal teams regarding their supply needs, and tracking purchases to reduce costs and increase effectiveness. The Purchasing Manager works to mitigate risks, especially with large purchases. They must have a knack for finding reliable partners and building and maintaining solid relationships with suppliers, so they need good interpersonal and networking skills. They must be aware of the company’s needs and should be able to access the appropriate quantity of goods and services to avoid any gaps in production. Sound judgment and excellent organizational skills are essential.
ENVIRONMENT OF POSITION:
A corporate environment within a manufacturer of control transformers in which teamwork, respect, and integrity are espoused. Functions independently in a multi-task environment and as part of a team. Works in an office and manufacturing environment with moderate noise levels and typical manufacturing conditions.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Business, or a related field
- Six or more years of Purchasing/Supply Chain experience with electrical or electronics products.
- Experience and education in recognized lean manufacturing fundamentals systems such as VSM, Poke Yoke, waste elimination, Kaizen, and root cause analysis.
- Excellent project management skills to manage the needs of multiple projects and priorities.
- A team builder who is comfortable working with cross-functional teams
- Ability to communicate across all levels, from the shop floor to executive team members.
- Ability to organize a document management and archiving process that meets corporate document retention policies.
- Excellent leadership skills to guide and mentor other employees and manage outside suppliers.
- This position is in the Sterling, IL plant and may require travel to the supplier, customer, and potential customer locations, including air travel. Overnight travel is expected to be approximately 10%.
- Proficient in ERP systems, Proficient Microsoft Office in Word and Powerpoint but advanced Excel skills, and Scheduling systems.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
The purchasing manager's responsibilities include developing purchasing strategies, maintaining positive relationships with suppliers, coordinating with internal teams regarding their supply needs, and tracking purchases in an effort to reduce costs and increase effectiveness. To be successful as a purchasing manager, you should be able to manage and optimize purchasing activities and processes. The Purchasing Manager owns the process for the timely development and refinement of processes to meet specified technical and cost goals in conformance with customer needs, industry standards, and company strategy and objectives. The position is also responsible for the creation of and management of, Purchasing documentation and change requests. The position employs advanced information technology systems to manage active and archival documentation storage. The position provides purchasing advice, counsel, and assistance to other company departments, suppliers, and customers as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:
- Developing and implementing purchasing strategies. Acts as the company’s representative in negotiations with suppliers. Managing supplier relations and negotiating contracts, prices, timelines, etc. Preparing cost estimates and operating budgets. Ensures that all procured items meet the required quality standards and specifications.
- Collaborates with other departments and leadership to identify and develop needs and requirements for equipment, materials, products, and acceptable substitutions.
- Participate in the sourcing of new products or alternate products with the design/manufacutring engineer team.
- Assesses current material availability; reasonably predicts future availability based on the market, delivery systems, and other variables. Prepares and presents market conditions and merchandise cost reports.
- Evaluates and approve conditions for issuing and awarding bids. Prepares and processes purchase orders and requisitions for materials, supplies, and equipment—Resolves grievances with vendors, contractors, and suppliers.
- Drafts, explains and implements purchasing and contract management instructions, policies, and procedures. Maintains the supplier database, purchase records, recording keeping system, and related documentation.
- Coordinating with inventory control to determine and manage inventory needs. Coordinates removal or disposal of surplus materials.
- Develop a planning matrix around pulling stuff from different sources and build a plan and then execute to that plan and make adjustments and prepare for the unknown
- Participate as a leader at the local level with the Sterling Leadership Team to drive execution of the Micron organizational plan
- Performs other duties as assigned.
