Description
Job description: The Medical Assistant functions as a member of the patient care team performing medical assisting duties. Under general supervision the Medical Assistant (MA) assists provider with patient care and all back-office duties. Ensures smooth work and patient flow within the clinic.

Essential Job Responsibilities: - Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned, including but not limited to: understanding provider's routine by anticipating needs to ensure smooth workflow and patient care; assisting in exam and treatment of patients under the direction of physician; updating intake information in EMR; performing screenings per provider guidelines; preparing treatment room by setting up instruments and equipment based on nature of visit (ex. injections); completing incoming and outgoing calls to appropriately address patient needs; documenting pertinent information according to practice protocols; charting and reviewing patient intake and follow protocols to satisfy MIPS measures.
- Fulfills clerical responsibilities as assigned, including but not limited to: sending/receiving patient medical records; obtaining lab/imaging/x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.; completing forms/requisitions as needed; scheduling appointments; verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics and PHI to coordinate patient care; managing and updating EMR to ensure complete and accurate patient record.
- Fulfills environmental responsibilities as assigned, including but not limited to: cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control; ordering, sorting, storing supplies; and restocking exam/procedure rooms; maintaining appearance of POD per practice policies.
- Fulfills organizational responsibilities as assigned, including but not limited to: respecting/promoting patient and staff rights; responding appropriately to emergency codes; sharing problems relating to patients and/or staff with appropriate personnel, ensuring HIPAA compliance.
- Fulfills clinical medical assisting responsibilities as applicable per state law, including but not limited to: medical/surgical asepsis, sterilization, and autoclaving; taking appropriate vital signs and metrics; DME fitting and/or casting as necessary; clinical pharmacology; prescription verifications with physician's orders; minor surgery assists including surgical tray set-up pre/post-surgical care, dressings and suture removal; biohazard waste disposal and monitoring; instructing patients with assistive devices, body mechanics, and home care; laboratory procedures under Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines; quality control methods; emergency triage, and first aid. Must adhere to the MA scope of practice in the clinic.

Education: High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED), medical assistant diploma or certification from an accredited vocational institution or a community college course in medical assisting preferred.
Experience: One year of recent experience working in a medical facility as a medical assistant and/or documented evidence of externship completed in a medical office preferred. Demonstrated ability to take vital signs, venipuncture, and injections.

Equipment Operated: Standard medical exam/office equipment including computerized health information management system for medical records.
Work Environment: Combination of medical office and exam/procedure room settings. Well-lighted, well-ventilated, adequate space.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to use appropriate body mechanics techniques when making necessary patient transfers and helping patients with walking, dressing, etc. Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds of supplies. Occasional stress from dealing with many staff and patients.
