This position will demand some out of town and out of state travel for trainings and conferences.
The Identification Specialist processes legislatively mandated State and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint based background investigations. Many duties are involved in this process to include:
- Entering tenprint impressions and descriptor information in the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) workstation.
- Verifying search results from the AFIS computer of the entered individuals with the candidates AFIS returned.
- Follows procedures and protocols, and Division of Criminal Investigation and Attorney General personnel regulations.
- Stay abreast to program advancements by attending trainings, networking with other states, and reviewing state and FBI standards.
- Shares general staff duties such as training, participating in accrediation audits, and monitoring the background backlog to ensure efficiency.
- Maintaining files in the state repository's computerized criminal history system(CCH) to ensure accurate, timely and complete criminal record information for background investigations performed.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have: - Graduation from high school or possession of GED is required. Advanced education desirable with experience in the science of fingerprint classification.
- Prior training/experience with the FBI, state or local law enforcement is beneficial.
- Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid driver's license for South Dakota.
- Must pass a comprehensive background investigation.

This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.
This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
