Classification Summary: This non-tenure track faculty position
brings the experience and expertise of real-world industry professionals into the classroom, providing students with invaluable insights and
skills they can use in their future careers. In addition to teaching, Professors of Practice may also serve as academic advisors, providing
guidance and support to undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. They also play an important role in supporting departmental
outcome assessment and accreditation efforts, contributing to faculty meetings, serving on committees, assisting with MOUs and Program
Agreements, and participating in scholarly teaching and learning activities. With their extensive knowledge and experience, Professors of
Practice are instrumental in helping students succeed and preparing them for the challenges of the professional world.
Classification Standard Duties: Responsibilities of a Professor of Practice include teaching, engaging in
service both within and outside the university, maintaining professional credentials, and/or other duties that the appointing Department
Head or Dean determines are consistent with this definition. Research responsibilities are not included in the expectations for a Professor
of Practice. A Professor of Practice should have professional teaching and service responsibilities that are significantly heavier than
those of tenured and tenure-track engineering faculty that conduct research.
Required Education, Experience,
Certification/License, Equivalency - PhD in a field of engineering

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities A Professor of Practice is in charge of facilitating discussions
and activities in adherence to courses, curriculums, and programs. A Professor of Practice should have experience in developing lesson
plans, creating coursework assessment and test structures, liaising with internal and external parties, establishing objectives and
guidelines, monitoring the students' progress, and providing assistance as needed. The position also requires interaction with industry
representatives regarding job skills in demand and pathways for professional development.
Job Duties and
Responsibilities - Assists in marketing campaigns with departments and university units, in particular the NMSU Office of
Digital Learning
- Assists departments in recruiting undergraduate students into the Master of Engineering degree programs via the
Masters Accelerated Program (MAP) pathway
- Plans and conducts orientation sessions and safety seminars for graduate students in
collaboration with departments and College of Engineering's Safety Specialist
- Communicates important deadlines and updates from
NMSU Graduate School to department heads, faculty members, and graduate students regarding admissions, registration, examinations,
graduation, etc.
- Assists graduate students in preparing and submitting forms for doctoral programs, master's programs, graduate
certificates, and award nominations
- Reviews and updates graduate program information provided on web pages, student handbooks,
NMSU Graduate Catalog, and social media outlets
- Teaches online courses in general subject areas for Master of Engineering degree
programs NMSU Main Campus and NMSU Global Campus graduate students
- Serves as liaison between faculty members and the NMSU Office
of Digital Learning in development and offering of online graduate courses
- Evaluates graduate programs at college level and
provides feedback to departments for continuous improvement purposes
- Assists departments in submitting proposals for new programs
such as graduate majors, minors, concentrations, and certificates
- Monitors graduate student applications in SLATE and provides
updates to department heads and graduate program directors
- Assists departments in advising graduate students on the NMSU Global
Campus, in particular those in Master of Engineering and graduate certificate programs
- Represents College of Engineering at
graduate school fairs and serves as industry liaison, in particular with employers having tuition remission programs
- Assists
departments in establishing MOUs and Program Agreements with international universities
