Job description

HSM has an opportunity for an Industrial Design Intern to work in the Transportation Engineering department located in Huntersville, NC. The Industrial Design Intern will support product development activities such as brainstorming events, sketching, CAD modeling, and branding support. The Industrial Design student will work both independently and collaboratively with the Huntersville and other HSM locations. This internship will provide the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and training in many aspects of our strong vertically integrated business, while also gaining a good understanding of the HSM organization.

HSM specializes through its subsidiaries, in the manufacturing of components for furniture, bedding, transportation, packaging, automotive, and healthcare industries. We also design and construct automated production machinery for these industries. We likely have manufactured something you use every day like sofa or bed springs, pool noodles, recliner mechanisms, packaging supplies, fabricated sofa cushions, bus seats, and much more.

• Research and conceptualize design solutions.
• Collaborate on and execute design projects with engineers and manufacturing liaisons.
• Create design drawings, 3D models and presentations for vehicle seating and interior components.
• Prototype solutions through both physical and digital mockups.
• Work to find synergies by interacting with our marketing, assembly, and manufacturing units.
• Explore new technologies in materials and rethinking manufacturing applications.
• Collaborate with multi-disciplinary project teams to execute on overall project objectives, deliverables, and timelines.
• Be able to create and give design presentations.
• Apply academic knowledge and have a willingness to learn new skills while participating in various improvement projects to support aesthetics, quality, manufacturing, and sustainability.
• Develop strong communication skills, both written and oral, to present technical issues in user-friendly language.
• Gain an understanding of various job functions within the HSM engineering department by providing active support to HSM employees and shadowing product development members. 

• Must have and maintain a 3.0 GPA.
• Pursuing a degree in Industrial Design or related major.
• Must provide a design portfolio showing, sketches, CAD, and physical mockups.
• Must be currently enrolled in a full-time degree program or anticipating graduation.
• Self-motivated, detail-oriented individual
• Must have great collaboration skills.
• Excellent computer CAD and sketching skills.
• Understanding of different design approaches and when to use them.
• Ability to research and investigate basic Industrial Design topics.
• The ability to work well under pressure and with deadlines.
• Analytical and problem-solving skills
