Department Description

Facilities Management provides operations and maintenance support for all campus facilities. The FM Energy & Engineering team is charged with developing and expanding energy initiatives across campus. The Utilities Division includes nine major utilities (electricity, gas, steam, chilled water, domestic water, utility water, sewer, storm drainage, solid waste) that are purchased, produced or otherwise provided to the campus.

Under supervision of the energy engineering supervisor, provide data support for energy and civil utility functions with an emphasis on managing campus utility databases, using and enhancing automated data reporting to perform data quality assurance tasks, and supporting efforts to measure and report utility usage and operational data. Work with engineering team, student interns, individual system managers, instrumentation and controls staff, and facility managers to implement best practices for monitoring utility use, data acquisition, database management, system performance metrics analysis, visualization, system improvement and automated reporting.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • May climb, crawl, bend, stoop and work in tight, confined areas.

  • Will spend extended periods of time in front of a computer terminal and typing on keyboard.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Valid CA driver’s license required.

Position will participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System.

This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy. Restricted vacation during peak periods.

This position may at times, require the individual to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present. Specific hazards include but are not limited to: asbestos, PCBs, radioactive materials, industrial and laboratory chemicals, fuels, solvents, infectious materials and wastes, biological hazards and other materials labeled hazardous.

This position supports critical campus functions operating 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. To assure adequate support of these functions the employee may be required to participate in a rapid response program to facilitate timely return of staff to the campus as required to meet critical needs. This rapid response program may include requirements for the employee to inform the University how they can be reached during non-working hours, to carry University provided radios, cell phones, pagers or other telecommunications equipment which would facilitate communication between the campus and employee during non-work hours, or to accept rotating on-call responsibility which could periodically restrict the off-campus movements of the employee. Employee is personally responsible for following safety procedures/guidelines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • B.S. degree in Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or Mathematics from an accredited program, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Knowledge and experience with the collection and management of real-time field data, including SCADA systems, process control systems, and metering devices.

  • 3-5 years of experience in creating and managing complex databases.

  • 3-5 years of experience in an operations environment, such as the utility, manufacturing or industrial sectors.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Skilled in coding, analytics and scripting languages such as Python, R, SQL, C, Visual Basic, Matlab, Octave, or C sharp.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:

  • Experience with water and energy system operation, maintenance and analysis. System knowledge to include: water treatment, water production, central steam generation and distribution, central chilled water production and distribution, natural gas distribution, and supporting equipment.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Knowledge of AVEVA PI system tools is highly preferred.

  • Excellent customer service skills, effective oral and written communication skills, and ability to convey technical concepts and data to a wide audience.

  • Skill in successfully managing technical projects, program budgets and schedules.

  • Knowledge of computer software and hardware, meters and measurement devices used to monitor and/or control energy systems
