Job Summary: The Associate Director of Orientation and New Student Experience serves in the Division of Student Success at St. John's University and handles a comprehensive, year-round new student orientation program that strengthens the connection of new students and their families to the university in their first year.
Essential Functions: The Associate Director will oversee the selection, training, and development of a team of Undergraduate Orientation Coordinators, Orientation Leaders, Group Zero (student workers), and a graduate assistant. The successful candidate will also support the first-year seminar program (Discover New York), new student convocation, and family weekend.
- Spearhead Orientation Leader recruitment, hiring, and evaluation processes
- Liaison with the Enrollment Management and Student Affairs communication teams in the marketing of new student orientation to incoming students and their families
- Coordinate spring and summer training and development of the Orientation Leader team
- Provide strategic leadership and supervision of the New Student Orientation program which consists of the Freshman, Transfer, International, and Graduate Student Orientation programs and Parent/Family programs
- Plan and implement a wide range of new student programs including Family Weekend
- Serve as the Student Affairs lead while coordinating with University Events for New Student Convocation
- Support the overall management and operation of new student programming, including the first-year seminar, Welcome Week, Explore and More, Parent University, and others
- Build connections to key student support areas to sustain a year-round model of supporting student success through mentoring, programming, and various media.
- Work autonomously to plan, organize, and coordinate the delivery of services and programs to our incoming students and parents/family members
- Supervise one graduate assistant, 4 student coordinators, up to 60 Orientation Leaders, and 4 office assistants
- Develop and implement an inclusive and inspiring training program for Orientation Leaders during the spring semester and the summer prior to the program
- Plan and implement several on-going new student programs and focus groups to assist students in making a smooth transition into St. John's and becoming aware of available services throughout the University
- Collaborate with Marketing and Communications to design, update, and print all printed materials for all new student and family programs
- Build and sustain relationships with key campus partners, including Enrollment Management University Freshman Center; Academic Colleges; Student Affairs Units; Public Safety; Facilities and Conference Services; Campus Dining; International Student Scholar Services; faculty; and others
- Manage the creation, development, and implementation of the Bilingual Guide program for incoming international students
- Coordinate all logistics regarding housing and meals for orientation participants and staff
- Coordinate, compile, and report statistical data regarding all programs to measure effectiveness, satisfaction, and attendance
- Manage daily operations of the area budget, process program expenditures including student and faculty stipends, external and internal invoices, and make commitments fiscally responsible
Competencies: The ideal candidate will be a strong leader, who is grounded in student development knowledge and experience with a creative-minded and detail-oriented approach. They will be able to build and sustain strong partnerships with campus partners and outside vendors to effectively engage first year, transfer, graduate, and international students and exposing them to the traditions and value of a St. John's education.

Work Environment: This position operates in a professional office environment and the incumbent is required to use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, etc. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; move about; sit; to carry work; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; and communicate. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 50 lbs.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: This position is full-time, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and will require evening and weekend hours. Travel is primarily local and may include visits to the other NY campuses.
Required Education and Experience: - Experience and/or background in student development, new student initiatives, and leadership development
- Master's degree in higher education, college student personnel, or counseling required
- 5 to 7 years of professional experience
- Supervisory experience, strong organizational skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, computer literacy and/or knowledge of database/information systems extremely helpful
- The ability to establish relationships and collaborate with faculty and staff and relate effectively with students strongly preferred

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary range for this position is $65,000-$74,000. St. John's University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
This position may be relocated to any of St. John's University's physical locations at any time.
