Job description
Job Responsibilities: (This list may not contain all the duties assigned and can change)
- Maintain specimen integrity and patient identification of all samples examined.
- Screen and evaluate cytology slides.
- Perform rapid assessments of fine needle aspirations.
- Enter and/or report results into the laboratory information system as applicable.
- Adhere to and document required quality control activities.
- Comply with all local and federal regulations.
- Participate successfully in required training and competency assessment.
- Participate in a CMS approved proficiency testing program annually, as applicable.
- Acquire and document required number of continuing education hours annually.
- Actively supports and assists in implementation and monitoring of quality control and quality assurance policies
- Participate in and document quality control re-screening as applicable.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient test results in accordance with HIPAA.
- Perform other duties as assigned, including, but not limited to, specimen processing and data entry.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Slide examination rate must comply with NYS Cytopathology Standard 14 and 15, which on average does not exceed 17.5 slides per hour for location-guided methods and 12.5 slides per hour for conventional methods. Must be conscientious and thorough. Must have the ability to concentrate at the microscope. Must be able to work alone and handle stressful circumstances. Must be proficient using LIS. Must be able to solve problems. Must be able to work as part of a team and interact with other medical and non-medical staff professionally.
Qualifications / Education:
- BS Degree in Biology or related science. Must complete and graduate from an accredited Cytotechnology program.
- NYS Cytotechnologist License is required. (Requires ASCP Certification)
- Four years' experience as a cytotechnologist.
