The National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) is a highly diversified national science laboratory that engages in a wide variety of physical/chemical science research programs and industrial activities that have the recognized potential to expose its employees, to occupational health/safety conditions more complex than is routinely found in many commercial and industrial type activities. The Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing management oversight of the health clinic, performing physical exams, providing direct patient care including first aid and routine inquiries, ergonomic assessments, administering immunizations and vaccines, and assisting with other occupational health services as needed.
Responsibilities - Serve as the NIST Medical Officer.
- As requested, serve as a consultant to NIST Management on all matters
- regarding occupational medicine.
- Practice clinical medicine involving the performance of emergency, diagnostic and preventive health care services. Services are to include physical examinations and emergency medical treatment, as appropriate, as well as preventive health screening programs, occupational health surveillance examinations, health counselling, etc. Must have/maintain proficiency in the use of EKG and pulmonary function machines. Provide cardiac emergency care in accordance with current Advanced Cardiac Life Support guidelines, to include external pacing, intravenous access and medication delivery, endotracheal intubation, and manual defibrillation, among others. Wound care to include suture placement and removal.
- Perform various physical examinations, such as fitness for duty, preemployment, and DOT exams.
- Evaluate and render opinions regarding the medical aspects of fitness-for-duty exams, pre-employment physical exams and NIST employee FECA claims arising from reported occupational injury/illness/disease; serve as NIST representative in obtaining and assessing medical information from referral physicians to reconcile OWCP cases when requested by the NIST COR or his/her designee.
- As requested, provide consultation, medical document review and advice to the appropriate NIST staff regarding employee requests for reasonable accommodations, and advice to the Civil Rights and Diversity Office to identify and eliminate employment barriers at NIST.
- Evaluation of health services provided by the NIST Health Unit with recommendations to the NIST Safety and Health Manager for changes in or broadening of service, as appropriate.
- Provision of consultation and advice to the NIST staff regarding occupational health concerns arising from research projects, etc.
- Consult as necessary with other medical professionals, e.g., patients’ primary care physician, to render judgements as to fitness for duty, reasonable accommodation, etc.
- Provide medical and administrative support, as appropriate, to the NIST-EAP counselor in connection with the NIST-EAP program (i.e., For alcohol abuse, drug abuse, emotional stress, etc.)
- Coordinate activities, training opportunities, and patient care best practices with the NIST Fire Department. The individual will NOT serve as the medical director for the NIST Fire Department.
- As requested, serve as a member of any NIST committees that may be formed requiring the input of the Medical Officer to determine internal NIST policy.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications - Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained
- Be a licensed Nurse Practitioner to practice in the state of Colorado
- Possess and maintain a valid certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Minimum three (3) years of recent experience as a nurse practitioner
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Shall have knowledge, skill and experience required to routinely perform venipuncture, EKG's, Pulmonary Function Tests, Audiometric Exams and Visual Acuity Exams
- Be able to communicate with all patients and other healthcare providers clearly and effectively
- Working knowledge of computers
- Ability to obtain within the first six (6) months of the position a Specialty Certification in Occupational Health, Acute Care, or Emergency
- Ability to obtain DOT certification within 60 days of employment (contractor shall be responsible for providing backup personnel who is certified to perform CDL medical examination during this 60-day period)
