Title: Substitute School Health Paraprofessional
Position Definition: The Health Paraprofessional assists school nursing personnel by performing routine health-related tasks and clerical services, under the direction of the school nurse, to aid in the healthcare needs of the students and staff.
Supervision received: The School Health Paraprofessional is supervised by the Health Services Supervisor. The School Nurse directly observes and works with the School Health Paraprofessional.
Examples of essential duties:
- Assisting the nurse when directed by the school nurse.
- Administers minor first aid and care to the ill or injured according to School Health Policies and Procedures and under the supervision of the school nurse.
- CPR and emergency epipen administration if needed.
- Assists with personal care needs of students such as changing clothes and providing nourishment.
- Assists Nurse with vision and hearing screenings. Prepares check-off sheets to document screening results, records screening, and immunizations on health records, and in SNAP.
- Assists with ambulation, transportation, and or escort activities
- Complies with policies on confidentiality and security of information and records including all Federal and State laws and regulations governing the privacy of student health information.
- Conveys or obtains health-related information as directed.
- Answers telephone, takes messages and makes transportation arrangements for ill or injured students.
- Files and/ or photocopies transfer students' health records.
- Prepares educational health-related information for distribution as directed by the school nurse.
- Maintains orderliness and cleanliness of the school health room, supplies and equipment.
- Physical Assessment and Immunization Data entry into SNAP and CHR
Experience and Training:
High School Diploma and ParaPro or Associate's degree, CPR, AED, Epipen, and First Aid training; Physical, mental exertion/environmental conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to: hear, speak, stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, or crouch, lift and carry up to 30 pounds, climb stairs to various levels, use hands to finger, handle feel or operate objects such as instruments, use wrists for repetitive motion, reach with hands and arms and tolerate exposure to environmental allergens. The employee may occasionally have to move or walk at a quickened pace. Must maintain continuous visual acuity including close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Normal auditory ability to perform client assessments and provide technical care. The employee must be free from mental or physical disorders that would interfere with the performance of duties as described and must have the ability to maintain his/her composure with the public and coworkers in everyday stressful and emergency situations. Employees may occasionally have to function in situations where they are subjected to aggressive physical and/or verbal behavior.
