Bridgeport Public Schools Human Resources Department 45 Lyon Terrace, Room 310 Bridgeport, CT 06604 ADMINISTRATIVE JOB OPENING DIRECTOR OF SEL AND STUDENT AFFAIRS 12 MONTH POSITION The Bridgeport Board of Education is committed to working with students and their families to promote regular attendance, which in turn, encourages personal growth by preparing the student to accept similar responsibilities in the world outside of the school setting. The Director of SEL and Student Affairs will oversee the Bridgeport Public School District's Student Information System (SIS). The Director will be responsible for monitoring data, developing programs, collaborating with LEAP (Learner Engagement and Attendance Program) facilitators, be responsible for, and build relationships with students and families and be the lead in all SEL initiatives in the district to address the causes of chronic absenteeism, tardiness and student engagement. The Director will also support schools and students in disciplinary issues and proactive support to reduce behavior concerns.
RESPONSIBILITIES: - Oversee the development and management of District school attendance and review policies and procedure manuals.
- Supervise school counselors and social workers
- Supervise and run the district attendance team and SEL team and develop and monitor District attendance and SEL plans, outlining strategies to address chronic absenteeism and tardiness.
- Regularly review PreK through 12 attendance data to determine appropriate follow-up to support regular school attendance, and meet with principals, counselors, and LEAP coordinators to discuss next steps.
- Oversee the development of District dropout prevention programs, including Saturday School programs and monitor both for maintenance and growth.
- Develop and provide ongoing in-service training to District staff on attendance, effective practices for student engagement, and enrollment reporting.
- Create a vision and strategic plan for engaging families District wide.
- Develop and maintain processes, structures, and programs for Family and Community Engagement that cater to the unique needs and demographics of students and the community.
- Plan, develop, and administer programs, services and events designed to engage families and community members, meeting the identified needs of all learners in the community.
- Cultivate relationships with principals, fostering ongoing communication to enhance parent engagement and improve student attendance.
- Serve as a resource for school-related organizations, such as Parent Teacher Association (PTA), PTSO, PACs, etc.
- Partner effectively with the Student Services Team and School Leadership to achieve divisional goals, emphasizing family voice, empowerment, and community partnerships.
- Manage the district's expulsion and suspension programs and work with schools on establishing in school suspension programs and creating systems that will drastically reduce both.
- Review and revise student handbooks annually.
- Assist school teams with bullying investigations and matters involving students.
- Liaison to Juvenile Justice Administrators for all students
- Conduct student presentations and lead antibullying initiatives school and district wide.
- Inform the assistant superintendent of successful trends and areas needing improvement in family and community engagement.
- Prepare annual state discipline reports and analyze monthly student discipline data and work with schools on programs to improve student outcomes.
- Perform other related duties as needed or directed by the immediate supervisor/s.
- Coordinate and Supervise family events outside of school hours as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS :
- Familiarity with the District's Student Information System, such as PowerSchool or similar programs.
- Minimum of five years' experience in a leadership role focused on student accountability, attendance, and engagement.
- Must have in-depth knowledge of District and state attendance policies and procedures and the applicable State Education codes and laws that address compulsory attendance and due process procedures.
- Must have a good understanding and experience working with a diverse population and the cultural implications.
REQUIREMENTS: - Connecticut Intermediate Administrator (092) certification and counseling, social work, psychology, etc.
- Minimum of 5 years successful counseling, social work, psychology, or other helping professional experience
- Successful supervisory experience, including planning, classroom management, instructional development and delivery of professional growth, instructional delivery and student assessment strategies.
- Excellent oral and written skills
- Ability to work effectively with teachers, administrators, parents and community groups
- Demonstrated proficiency in use of technology.
This is a BCAS union position. The 2023-2024 salary range (Group 2) is MA $129,445 to PhD $162,351. Includes all benefits as outlined in the current contract.
