Job description
Directs the management and administration of all Recreational Sports & Fitness Services facilities, including the new 293,000 square foot Student Recreation & Wellness Center, two indoor intramural facilities, one multi-purpose arena, 27 acres of outdoor recreational field space, Spartan Greens Turf Complex, and an off-site sailing center; develops short-term and long-range strategic plans for all Recreational Sports & Fitness Services facilities; oversees all university community outreach initiatives for the department; oversees risk management and liabilities for Recreational Sports & Fitness Services facilities and operations; ensures all facilities are compliant with MSU and Student Life & Engagement (SLE) policies and procedures; partners with SLE Business & Financial Services department to create and oversee financial performance of all budgets to ensure revenues and expenditures are within the general fund budget; recommends the annual priorities for major expenditures of repair and maintenance funds; represents the department to contractors, vendors, and consultants during any construction projects; serves on various committees to represent the department and its services; responds to inquiries from University departments, students, or others to resolve concerns and issues related to Recreational Sports & Fitness Services; recruits, hires, trains, evaluates, and provides leadership and direction to the Recreational Sports & Fitness Services leadership team and staff; establishes and maintains productive relationships with all internal and external partners; builds and maintains a positive image for Recreational Sports & Fitness Services with the students, staff, and campus community; demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of all MSU and SLE emergency procedures; monitors local and national industry standards and trends with recreational sports facilities to ensure MSU practices are meeting or exceeding all standards and expectations.
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor’s degree work such as a program in Business Administration, Residential and Hospitality, Student Affairs/Higher Education and Counseling or related fields such as Sports/Recreation Management, Kinesiology, Health and Wellness Management, Health and Physical Education, and Higher Education; more than eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in facilities management, sports/recreation management and services related to non-academic programs, construction and renovation, and supervision/administration of a large work force; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Master’s Degree in Recreation/Sports Management, Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Health and Physical Education or related field; demonstrated experience developing and leading campus-wide recreation and wellness/wellbeing initiatives; demonstrated experience supporting and fostering a diverse student, staff, and faculty environment; certification in First Aid, CPR, and AED.
