Description The Desktop Systems Administrator is a hands-on, senior member of the technical support team responsible for desktop, laptop, and mobile configuration and integration along with supporting applications on Windows,Mac operating and Linux systems. This position requires excellent prioritization, responsiveness, customer service, and verbal communication skills. This individual contributes to the efficient allocation of computer hardware and software resources, student support, and ensures the reliability, security, and sustainability of the client computing experience at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Using effective communication, technical, and analytical skills, the Desktop Systems Administrator manages projects, provides technical support, maintains resources, and, within delegated authority, supervises support personnel. In keeping with Hobart and William Smith Colleges community standards, the Desktop Systems Administrator develops positive working relationships with all HWS constituents.
Essential Responsibilities: - Responsible for developing and deploying the desktop infrastructure to create a campus computing standard while supporting the unique needs of the individual and/or department.
- Responsible for developing and deploying printing, mobile devices, and other peripheral equipment infrastructure to create a campus standard while supporting the unique needs of the individual and/or department.
- Serves as higher-tiered technical support to Service Desk personnel.
- Maintains records using the Team Dynamix Service Management system by logging all service requests and following them through to completion.
- Assist with analyzing trends, evaluates the effectiveness of policies and procedures for problem resolution and provides operational recommendations.
- Maintain an awareness of emerging technologies, trends, and advances in the profession.
PROJECT/PROGRAM MANAGEMENT: In addition to the general support responsibilities outlined above, this position will share in the duties of managing projects and programs such as listed below:
- Computer Replacement and Budgeting - This program manages all public, faculty, and staff computer replacement. Responsible for researching emerging technology and trends, working with the vendor on pricing, and setting standards for the HWS community that strives to provide the best technology for the best price.
- Onboarding of New Technologies and/or Services - Manages the testing of new technologies and/or services with the current technology to ensure a seamless transition.
- Desktop and Mobile Device Infrastructure Security - Managing this program includes staying abreast of desktop and mobile device security, including assisting in the management of malware prevention systems. It also includes making recommendations for configurations protect the institution.
- Print Management - This program includes managing the infrastructure that supports faculty, staff, and student printing(PaperCut).
- Non-Standard Technical Support - Serves as a technical expert on non-standard software and hardware, which will require skills development, used to support the specialized needs of the campus, such as Linux/Unix, RStudio, etc.
- Strengthen digital literacy skills through education and the application of digital technologies to effectively engage in information gathering, utilization, and data management while promoting a security culture.
- Must complete all required federal, state, institution, and department training.
- Engages in a planned program of professional development. Continually maintains skills and knowledge relative to the position and technology industry, including best practices, evolving operational requirements, and industry trends.
- Demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to unique social, cultural, and economic circumstances.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the Colleges' educational philosophy and mission.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Other Information: This is a full-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible position. This position description is not all-inclusive as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned. Work hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during the academic year, with a possible shortened workweek during the scheduled summer hours time period. Minimum starting salary of $58,500,
Qualifications - Bachelors Degree plus a minimum of 3 years of technology support experience or the equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
- Experience with Active Directory, Windows , Group Policy, Windows registry, Windows File and Print, TCP/IP, Firewall and Anti-Malware
- A Certification, ITIL, or comparable certifications is preferred.
- Knowledge of IT Service Management principles (ITIL) is preferred.
- Working experience with Windows and Apple operating systems along with proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, and similar productivity tools.
- Must work well under pressure and have excellent customer service skills, including communicating technical processes to non-technical individuals.
- Willingness to learn the academic and administrative functions of a higher ed institution.
- The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and have the skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
