Job description

Summary: Oversee the capture of Patient responsibility balances due to Bone & Joint in accordance with Bone & Joint collection policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Efficiently monitor and manage all patient accounts including delinquent or bad debt.
  2. Contact and follow up with patients to discuss account balances and opportunities including payment arrangements or 3rd party loan options.
  3. Manages notifications to patients on payment delinquency via phone, mail and/or electronic measures.
  4. Document details of the payment arrangement or any other patient communications in all appropriate places and/or systems so others can follow up if needed in your absence.
  5. Collect or process patient payments in association with delinquent or bad debt.
  6. Work with eligible Patients requesting Financial assistance through the application and approval process.
  7. Monitor Financial Assistance payment plans approved by Bone & Joint.
  8. Act as Primary facilitator with patient on 3rd party loan origination.
  9. Discuss exceptions requested or proposed with the Revenue Cycle Leadership.
  10. Respond to all patient inquiries within 48 hours with an update and/or an estimate of when there may be a resolution.
  11. Receive and review the remittance advice and monthly reports on payments from collections agencies.
  12. Correspond and manage suit authorization processing within Bone & Joint and the Collection agency.
  13. Recommend and document appropriate bad debt write-offs to submit to the collection agency.
  14. May process internal adjustments or write offs associated with bankruptcies, deceased patients, 3rd party reported payments or as assigned by Revenue Cycle Leadership.
  15. Support Patient Advocates as requested on collection of patient account balances or related inquiries they may have.
  16. Oversight and support of Patient statement processing and statement communication content.
  17. Report on patient collections activities as requested.
  18. Primary support to Bone & Joint on Collection related systems and vendors, including Patient Statements, Collection Agency, Auto-Collection's system, Merchant Services, etc., for the purpose of optimizing patient collections.
  19. Utilize public and Government resources to support our collection process.
  20. Contribute to improving processes, procedures, and the Patient experience at Bone & Joint.
  21. Provide an excellent patient care experience to our patients throughout the collection process.

Education/Experience :

  1. Two or more years' experience in medical accounts receivables management and collections for Patient responsibility, either in a medical practice or at a collection's agency.
  2. Experience balancing accounts and handling payments required.
  3. Experience with medical insurers, both commercial and government required.
  4. Success in making Patient payment arrangements required.
  5. Ability to make sound judgments according to procedures or acceptable recommendations for exceptions when needed, required.
  6. Excellent verbal and written communications skills required.
  7. Patience, respect, and compassion working with people at all levels, internal and external, required.
  8. Ability to help Patients or to get medical help for Patients in an emergency required.
  9. Previous experience with an online medical practice management system and EMR required.
  10. Experience with Microsoft Excel© and Microsoft Word© required.
  11. High School graduate required.

Qualifications:

  1. Experience with a collection's agency preferred.
  2. Classes, knowledge and/or experience with ICD 10, CPT preferred.
  3. Knowledge and/or experience with local low-income programs preferred.
  4. Knowledge and/or experience with local tribal programs preferred.
  5. Experience with procedural documentation preferred.
