A licensed registered nurse with advanced education and training as a nurse practitioner who is involved in all aspects of OBGYN patient care, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment and consultation. The nurse practitioner works both independently and as part of a healthcare team. They work in a collaborative practice, with one or more physicians, caring for a panel of patients.
Clinical Responsibilities:
Obtains and records patient and family health history, performs comprehensive physical assessments, obstetric/gynecologic history as part of physical examination, including social and psychological needs. Perform a physical examination with specific emphasis on evaluation of Women Health Issues. Manages patients medications and prescribes appropriate medications as needed Orders and interpret routine laboratory test. Develop a Women's health promotion and maintenance plan, including disease prevention, health education and counselling. Provide clinical management of women having gynecologic illnesses. Provide assessment, education and management for family planning. Provide ambulatory prenatal care for women with attention to both maternal and fetal health. Performs minor procedures such as IUD and Implanon insertion/removal. Makes referrals to other healthcare providers for comprehensive patient care Establishes a therapeutic patient-health care provider relationship Documents patient encounters clearly, concisely and with-in the expected SSMC time frames
Communication:
Establishes effective working relationship with physicians, APCs, nurses, medical assistants and other support staff, to ensure a coordinated team approach to patient care. Meets with supervising physician on mutually agreed upon regular basis, to discuss patient care issues and concerns Attends appropriate department and organizational meetings to stay abreast of current issues, trends, processes, systems and programs that affect the delivery of patient care and changes in the work environment Brings important issues of concern and ideas to the Department Chief and/or APC Chief for discussion and appropriate resolution and/or planning.
Professional Development:
Attends both internal and external educational conferences and seminars that enhance current medical knowledge and skill development Participates in professional activities, such as: active membership in professional organization, serving on community BOD, clinical precepting students, guest lecturing, faculty appointments and/or volunteering at community health related events. Maintains current board certification as defined by certifying organization and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Board of Registration of Nursing regulations.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Considerable knowledge of interviewing and listening techniques; Ability to deal tactfully and respectfully with a variety of diverse patients; Maintain clinical electronic records;
Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team; Communicates effectively both written and verbally;
Education: Masters or Doctoral Degree in Nursing with completion of state acceptable Nurse Practitioner program
License/Certificates: Licensed as a registered and an advanced practice nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Board certification as a Nurse Practitioner from a recognized national certifying organization.
Prescription privileges: Massachusetts State CDL; Federal DEA
BLS certification
Experience: Preferably at least 3 years' experience (or equivalency) practicing in an advanced practice role in primary care or specialty, as defined by the position
Physical Demands: Sitting and/or standing for prolonged periods of time; Manual dexterity to handle medical equipment such as stethoscope, otoscope and ophthalmoscope, blood pressure equipment; syringes and needles and some minor surgical instruments, as well as office equipment such as a keyboard, telephone, copy machine and other office equipment. Job may require assisting patients on and off exam tables, in and out of wheelchairs and requires pushing wheelchairs. Sight requirements include depth perception, ability to adjust vision to bring objects into focus; ability to distinguish colors and read numbers. Hearing must be in the normal range for patient interviewing and telephone contacts.
Working Conditions: Medical office setting. Climate controlled. Fluorescent lighting. Frequent exposure to communicable disease, bodily fluids, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medical preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment. May require working irregular hours, weekends and holidays
