Job description
The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), a six-time National Recreation and Parks Association Gold Medal Award Winner is seeking an Ice-Skating Director to work within Montgomery Parks at the Wheaton Ice Arena. The Department serves a diverse population of more than one million residents in Montgomery County, Maryland, and manages 419 parks on more than 37,000 acres of parkland. The Department has an annual operating budget of over $100 million, a six-year Capital Improvement Program of over $180 million, and a career staff of nearly 800 employees.
The Ice-Skating Director will perform professional managerial work in the programming and operation of a multi-functional facility, Wheaton Ice Arena, with an NHL rink, pro shop, snack bar, locker rooms, weight room, party/meeting rooms, and bleacher seating. The Ice-Skating Director will report to the Ice-Skating Program Coordinator and will work in coordination with the Wheaton Ice Arena Facility Manager. This position will work with staff in developing, implementing, and conducting various recreational ice-skating programs, specialized skating programs (freestyle, ice dancing, hockey, etc.), camps, competitions, special events and assists in managing day to day ice rink operations. The Ice-Skating Director will also be responsible for overseeing at least 20 contracted ice-skating instructors, seasonal staff supervision (camp staff, activities staff), administration, facility budget, marketing, and customer service.
This position requires regular exercise of independent judgment and performance of duties within policy guidelines. Also required is the development of successful business strategies and methodologies to achieve optimum facility operations.
Weekends and Evenings are required.
Supervise facility operations. Assists staff in managing the day to day operations of the ice rink.
Coordinate and Oversee facility programming (classes, camps, specialty sessions (freestyle, dance, adult, etc.) at the Wheaton Ice Arena. Defines goals and objectives. Sets fees and evaluates programs. Plan and organize classes to include preparing rosters and evaluations, handling waitlists, class transfers, and refunds. Input programs into the registration software. Assign instructors. Assist with program registrations for camps and classes.
Camp responsibilities include creating and implementing camps. Oversee correspondence with parents; hiring, scheduling, and training staff; camp paperwork; setting up activities/trips; arranging transportation; participating on the Youth Camp Standards Committee; and complying with Youth Camp Standards (YCS).
Plan, implement, and administer all aspects of special events (ice exhibitions/shows, competitions, tournaments, special holiday skates, National Skating Month, Hockey Weekend) that will appeal to diverse audiences of all ages at Wheaton Ice Arena.
Supervise designated staff to assist with all skating activities. Recruits, hires, trains, and evaluates staff and volunteers. Plans, schedules, and assigns work. Ensures all staff receive various trainings (CPR/First Aid; Defensive Driving; Customer Service; Youth Camp Standards, etc.). Conducts performance appraisals.
Assists the Ice-Skating Program Coordinator with recruiting and hiring instructors at Wheaton Ice Arena. Oversee the scheduling of instructors and ensures instructors are in compliance with the terms and conditions of their contracts.
Provides assistance and general customer service to customers. Sets a positive example for employees ensuring customers are treated in a prompt, professional, respectful manner.
Participates in budget formulation regarding projected revenues and expenditures for responsible areas. Regularly monitoring revenues and expenditures within approved budget and reporting them to management. Prepares financial reports and recommendation of fees. Conducts research to identify trends or seek information that would be useful to develop programs and evaluate them.
Keeps program records. Maintains records of revenues and expenditures, timecards, staff schedules, instructor contracts and insurance certificates, inventory of supplies and equipment, program rosters and participants paperwork, etc. Review and approve instructor payments.
Assists with marketing programs, competitions, and special events. Works with marketing staff to promote through various media outlets including social media (Facebook, websites); assist with preparation of marketing materials such as brochures, flyers, and the Recreation guide. Review and monitor facility websites for needed changes and updates by marketing department.
Coordinates externally. Meets with citizens, instructors, parents, community groups, and government agencies to identify needs, plan programs, and answer questions about programs.
1. Bachelor’s degree or four years experience in one of the following fields: parks, recreation, education, business administration, physical education, communication, leisure services, or in area of required specialty; and
2. Two years of responsible professional experience working in a facility related to parks, recreation, education, business administration, health education, physical education, communication, leisure services, or area of required specialty; or
3. An equivalent combination of education and experience;
4. A valid driver’s license or ability to acquire one; and
5. A valid operating license (e.g., county pool operator’s, child care license) as appropriate.

Working Conditions:
Works in an assigned facility, which may operate seven days per week. Works extended hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Responds to emergency situations as required. Requires regular contact with the general public. Responds to citizens’ complaints. On-call 24 hours. Attends meetings and programs at various facilities.
