Job description

Nelson Provincial Museum Pupuri Taonga o Te Tai Ao is seeking a part-time (16 hours p/w) Research Assistant to join our dedicated team. This role offers a unique opportunity to be the interface between our valuable collections and the community. As a Research Assistant, you will have the chance to immerse yourself in the rich history of the region and its people. You will play a vital role in facilitating access to our taonga and collections, supporting research-based activities, and connecting researchers and whānau with the treasures cared for by the Museum. Additionally, you will be involved in undertaking collection improvement projects, ensuring the preservation of precious stories and knowledge. Key Responsibilities: - Facilitate and support collection access, providing a high standard of service to researchers, whānau, and visitors. - Respond to collection and research inquiries, maintaining accuracy and confidentiality. - Coordinate curatorial responses, access, and handling of collection materials. - Maintain a centralised system to record researcher and visitor inquiries for reporting purposes. - Coordinate fee-based research services and provide feedback on visitor needs and accommodations. - Supervise and care for collection materials, following cultural protocols and ensuring cultural safety. - Maintain vigilance and security during access appointments, handling objects according to curatorial advice. - Develop a comprehensive understanding of collection strengths and relevance to the region. - Stay up to date with professional information and contribute to relevant conferences and training sessions. - Promote the Museum as a centre of excellence, adhering to professional standards and building relationships with mana whenua iwi. - Contribute to emergency management and disaster preparedness. - Provide cover for other staff and perform other duties as required. Requirements: - Tertiary qualification or relevant experience in museum studies, education, history, or similar fields. - Understanding and appreciation of tikanga Māori. - Experience in historical or information-based research using collection information systems. - Excellent people and communication skills. - Ability to work independently and collaboratively with colleagues. - Familiarity with computer systems and data processing. - Attention to detail and accuracy.
