Job description

Job Duties:

The Accountant II in the Accounting Services area will provide accounting support in institutional trust fund administration, lease accounting, fiduciary accounting, annual bond compliance, cash counts, cash reconciliations, capital asset accounting, financial reporting and with the completion of other analysis as needed. The position assists with the establishment, administration, distribution and monitoring of Endowments, Institutional Trust Funds, and other funds. This includes monitoring the financial activity of endowments, overhead receipts and other restricted and unrestricted funds that are not managed by departments, as well as ensuring that funds are properly disbursed in accordance with the regulations established by the approved fund authority for each fund. This position will also support the capital asset accounting and financial reporting functions by assisting with the completion of capital budget entries and North Carolina Financial System ( NCFS ) monthly reporting.

At fiscal year-end, this position is involved in providing information for University financial reports and assisting with the year-end closing process. This position works directly with State auditors to answer specific questions related to University accounting procedures, practices and methods as needed.

This position must understand, apply, explain, and ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and practices. Understanding of accounting theory and practice, in addition to considerable knowledge and expertise with legal and contractual terminology are essential to this position. Consistent, accurate, complete, and correct accounting procedures are critical to the University financial reporting and compliance processes. This position interprets state and federal law, University policies, UNC System Business Process Compliance Guidelines, N.C. General Statutes, and Foundation policies, in addition to analyzing investment activity and profit/loss statements for assigned funds. The position will require frequent use of electronic tools for data extraction, analysis, and financial reporting.

This position may be eligible for Flexible Work Arrangements ( FWA ) under the East Carolina University ( ECU ) FWA Policy.

In accordance with the ECU FWA Policy, this position requires you to live within a reasonable commuting distance of ECU .

Minimum Education/Experience:

Bachelor's degree with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework; or Associate degree in accounting; or Associate degree in business or related discipline with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Organizational Unit Overview:

The Division of Administration and Finance is ultimately responsible for all financial and administrative activities of East Carolina University and its affiliated Foundations. The Division consists of Financial Services, Campus Operations, Information Technology and Computing Services, Human Resources, Environmental Health and Campus Safety, Auxiliary Services and various support activities related to the ECU affiliated Foundations. The Division is led by the Vice Chancellor of Administration & Finance. The Vice Chancellor is responsible for oversight of the policies, personnel, budgets and administrative activities of all operations at East Carolina University and its affiliated Foundations. This division is a service provider in support of academic, research, and outreach missions of the University. Within the Division, Financial Services is responsible for financial activities of East Carolina University and its affiliated Foundations. The mission of Financial Services is: To provide for the financial needs of the University and its Foundations in a customer-oriented, friendly environment while assuring the proper stewardship of all fiscal resources. The Accounting Services unit within Financial Services is responsible for providing accounting, investing, reporting and advising services to the campus community. These activities are continually subject to audit by internal auditors and external auditors.
