Shift Details

• Full-time
• 2x12 hour shifts - 6AM-630PM
• 2x8 hour shifts - 6AM-230PM

Job Description  

The Medical Lab Technician will assist the medical technologist in performing a variety of tests in one or more areas of work, such as hematology, immunology, or toxicology, for use by physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. This position has an established career path with the opportunity to grow.

Other duties of the Medical Lab Technician include but are not limited to: 

• Perform chemical, bacteriological, serological, or microscopic laboratory test procedures on specimens in one laboratory section.
• Perform quality control to ensure proper functioning of instrumentation reagents, and procedures.
• Recognize instrument malfunctions and abnormal test results and take corrective action.
• Calibrate, standardize, and maintain instruments following established procedures. Prepare reagents, standards, and controls according to prescribed procedures.
• Validate, review, and report results of tests performed.
• Assist in training students and new staff members in laboratory tests and procedures.
• Perform tests requiring routine and/or complex instrumentation such as optical, photometric, fluorometric, electronic, automated, and scintillation.
• Research and develop new medical laboratory procedures as assigned.
• Dispose of or properly handle biological, radioactive, and/or hazardous waste in a manner that is consistent with laboratory, university, state, and federal government policy.
• Participate in ordering supplies, materials, and equipment as needed.
• Perform related work as assigned.
• May complete unit/department-specific duties and expectations as outlined in department documents.  

Required Qualifications  

One of the following:

• Associate degree from an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program; or
• Associate degree in chemistry, biology, or physics and two (2) years of experience in a medical laboratory area; or
• Associate degree in chemistry, biology, or physics and completion of a military laboratory training program of at least one (1) year duration; or
• Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or physics.

Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.
