The Cornell Tech K-12 Computer Science Community Coaching (CSCC) program provides support to New York City public elementary and middle schools to bring a rigorous, joyful computer science (CS) education to all students. Our CSCCs are CS master teachers with experience in providing coaching and professional development to teachers new to computing. Our team culture embraces collaboration, equity, innovation, research and deep connection to the NYC and national CS education community. In the ethos of making computer science teachable for all, Cornell Tech seeks a Computer Science Community Coach to join our K12 Equity Lab, within our larger K12 Education Initiative. We are committed to making computer science teachable to every student in NYC in order to create just and ethical access to the digital world.
Position Summary
The Computer Science Community Coach will be a key member of Cornell Tech's K12 Equity Lab, responsible for implementing and enhancing computer science education across partnering K-8 schools in NYC. This role involves close collaboration with school principals, teachers, and other educational stakeholders, with a strong focus on equity, justice, and professional learning. Cornell Tech supports a whole school model of CS instruction. The CS Community Coach spends an average of one day per week in each partner school in their portfolio, becoming a member of the school community, and coaching small groups of teachers in six-week cycles throughout the year. Each coach works with up to three schools. The coach is responsible for building a sustainable CS community within these schools, helping to co-design a scope and sequence and professional learning plan as well as building the capacity of teachers to bring computing to their classrooms.
This is a one-year position, with the opportunity to be renewed for up to two additional years at the mutual agreement of Cornell Tech and the CSCC. During the school year, 80% of the coach's time will be spent working at 2-3 partner schools in the Northeast Bronx and elsewhere in NYC. CS Community Coaches are required to work from the Cornell Tech campus on Roosevelt Island an average of one day per week during the school year and three days a week during the summer. This role includes occasional evening and weekend commitments as well as travel for conferences 1-2 times a year. They will report to the Director of the K12 Equity Lab.

Essential Functions include:
Community Coach - 60%
- Provide CS content coaching to teachers, focusing on effective teaching strategies and curriculum implementation in computer science. Your coaching practice will center around the following areas:
- Rigor and Joy: Collaborate with educators to infuse their classrooms with engaging, challenging content using proven teaching strategies.
- Equity and Justice: Lead conversations and initiatives focused on equity and justice within the realm of computer science education.
- Pedagogical Empowerment: Support teachers in mastering computer science content and teaching strategies through the lenses of equity, rigor, and joy.
- Computational Agency: Develop tools and strategies that empower teachers and students to not just understand but also ethically shape the digital world in ways that benefit their own communities and align with their own cultural practices.
- Professional Development: Design and lead professional development for teachers to enhance their skills in computer science instruction and program development.
- Collaborate with Administrators: Work closely with school principals to develop and implement a comprehensive plan for computer science instruction across all grade levels.
- Curriculum Development: Curate existing materials and co-design new computer science curriculum to meet the needs of diverse learners and communities.
- Advocate for Students: Advocate for equitable and just computer science education, ensuring every school, teacher, and student has the opportunity to engage.
- Community-Building: Foster supportive, equity-centered communities focused on computer science implementation within school settings.
Contribute to the Cornell Tech K-12 CS Education Team - 30%
- Dissemination of Coaching Practices:
- Provide professional development in coaching.
- Lead and participate in educational conferences and events, sharing best practices and challenges in the field.
- Act as a model coach for other content coaches, sharing best practices and providing guidance.
- Participate in the development and execution of a computer science coaching institute to further professional growth in the field.
- K-12 Initiatives:
- Support other K-12 initiative events as needed, in service of our mission to make computer science teachable.
- Collaborate with teammates on outreach activities, such as field trip events on campus and the Cornell High School Programming Contest
- Share opportunities for growth and learning with the team
- Bring ideas for partnerships or content development to the team for discussion and collaboration
- Attend a weekly team meeting
- Participate in projects with occasional work responsibility falling above or below current classification.
Contribute to the CS Education Community - 10%
- Be an active member of the Computer Science Teachers Association and other K-12 CS organizations
- When relevant and time permits, present our work to colleagues at panels, meetings, events and conferences
- Respond to needs of community, partner schools and Cornell Tech
- Participate in and disseminate research into K-12 CS education
- When time permits, publish in professional journals and conference proceedings
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Education, or a related field
- Experience in teaching computer science at the K-12 level in a school setting
- Experience in coaching or mentoring in computer science, or related activities (essential to this role)
- A deep understanding of equity and justice paradigms and how they are reflected in public school settings
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
- A collaborative mindset with the ability to engage multiple stakeholders
- Ability to travel to school locations in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan and Queens that are up to a 20 min walk from the subway. Travel to meetings, school sites and event locations throughout NYC as needed.
- Classroom teaching experience (nontraditional classrooms included)
- Computer Science content and pedagogy knowledge, teaching experience
- Commitment to equity in education and broadening participation in computing
- Familiarity with K-8 computer science curriculum, including Scratch and robotics
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities, including communities of color
- Experience working with diversity, equity, inclusion, and wellbeing programs.
- Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and wellbeing.
- Ability to serve as an advocate for individuals of all ethnicities, genders, ages, and backgrounds.
- Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree
- Prior experience in curriculum design and instructional innovation
- K-5 experience and expertise (may be working in K-8 settings)
- Knowledge of the CSTA CS Standards and CS Educator Standards
- Experience developing and managing partnerships
- Familiarity with NYC public schools and/or teaching evaluation systems
- Postsecondary teaching experience (especially in teacher preparation programs)
