Federal Sector Union Representative
Based in Upstate NY
(required to live within commuting distance to our Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, or Albany offices)
SEIU Local 200United is now hiring a Union Rep for workers in Veteran’s Health Administration hospitals in Albany NY, Syracuse, Canandaigua, and Erie Pennsylvania, along with satellite facilities.

SEIU Local 200United is a Local chapter of SEIU that is made up of a wide variety of workers in public, private, and federal sectors.
Responsibilities:
- Train, mentor, and develop member leaders (some of whom are on paid release time for union business).
- Increase union density in an open shop environment.
- Represent workers in sometimes complex grievances and appeals resulting from dissatisfactions, contract violations, adverse actions, classification appeals, and other disputes.
- Enforcing our union contracts. This includes investigating and research, filing grievances for contract violations, filing unfair labor practice charges, and using impasse, conciliation, and mediation.
- Negotiate federal sector union contracts with long terms: both leading bargaining at the table and leading every aspect of contract campaigns from drafting proposals to organizing a member contract action team to job actions including pickets, rallies, and press conferences.
- Create communications materials.
- Carefully manage and maintain membership data to track and develop member activists, leaders, and participation.
Qualifications:
- The ideal candidate will have experience organizing an representing federal sector union workers and with labor relations under the FLRA.
- Commitment to the goals and principles workers’ rights.
- Demonstrated ability to work with people from diverse cultural, economic, and social backgrounds.
- Ability to think clearly and problem solve under pressure.
- Ability to independently create and follow through with a campaign plan from start to finish.
- Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet established benchmarks and deadlines.
- Strong speaking and writing skills a must.
- Ability to function in a computerized smartphone environment. Functional ability to utilize Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs, and social media.
- Willingness to work long hours, evenings, and weekends as needed.
- Experience negotiating CBAs (creating demands, contract costing, negotiating, running a public pressure campaign), ideally in the federal sector.
- Experience navigating the grievance process in the federal sector, as well as resolving issues outside a formal process.
- A valid driver’s license and an insured vehicle required.
Location:
Position requires candidate to live within commuting distance to our Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, or Albany offices, as well as some travel as the work is field based.
Compensation:
Salary range: $56,500—63,500 depending on experience plus a monthly car allowance. A benefits package including 100% employer-paid family health and dental insurance and a generous employer-paid defined benefit pension.
