Nurse Practitioner - Pre Admission Testing

Job description

The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) in Pre-admission Testing (PAT) independently develops a comprehensive data base on patients by obtaining a health history, completing a physical examination, ordering testing and consultation per guidelines, identifying problems and formulating an appropriate plan of care for the pre-surgical patient. The APN reviews diagnostic testing and formulates a plan for follow up of abnormal results. The APN consults with the anesthesiologist in complex cases and communicates to the attending surgeon and/or the primary care  physician the plan of care being initiated. The APN discusses issues potentially requiring changes in the surgical schedule with the Perioperative Team. The APN supports the nursing team in providing patient and family education in preparation for the surgical experience. The APN is available to provide updates to Same Day Surgery patient history and physical examinations as needed. The APN works collaboratively with the health care team in the pre-admission screening process maintaining professional relationships. Essential Job Functions:

  1. Conducts and documents a PAT history and physical examination utilizing department templates.

  2. Updates/conducts a history and physical examination for Same Day Surgery patients utilizing department templates, as needed.

  3. Conducts a pre-admission testing screening per surgical/anesthesia guidelines.

  4. Orders pre-admission testing orders according to established guidelines.

  5. Effectively identifies and evaluates the findings while complying with anesthesia evaluation guidelines.

  6. If needed, facilitates additional medical optimization in collaboration with the medical and surgical care team which may include but is not limited to: anesthesiology, community medical providers and/or the surgical team as appropriate.

  7. Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team members in optimizing each patients' condition prior to surgery

  8. Participates in nurse practitioner student clinical rotations as needed.

  9. Participates in preceptorship/mentorship of new nurse practitioner team members within the department as needed.

  10. Maintains continuing quality assessment and improvement activities through use of such tools as data collection, trending and analysis.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

 

  1. Master’s Degree in Nursing.

  2. 1+ years of experience in an advanced practice nurse role - New graduates with strong documented leadership and/or perioperative/surgical skills/experience will be considered

  3. 2+ years of experience as a registered nurse

  4. Knowledge/experience of principles of safety/HRO/lean/process or quality improvement

  5. Excellent communication and presentation skills with multidisciplinary and cross functional teams 

  6. Strong focus on teamwork, organizational and planning skills

  7. Experience with electronic medical record

 

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

 

  1. Doctor of nursing practice 

  2. 2+ years of experience as an advanced practice nurse role in perioperative setting

  3. Experience with EPIC preferred

 

Licenses and Certifications Required:

 

  1. Current valid NJ State Registered Nurse license.

  2. Current valid NJ State Advanced Practice Nurse 

  3. National Board Certification as a nurse practitioner or certified registered nurse anesthetist, in area of specialty

  4. American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification

  5. Current valid Controlled Dangerous Substances license

  6. Current valid Drug Enforcement Agency License 

 

Licenses and Certifications Preferred:

 

  1. Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Certification from the American Heart Association

  2. National Board Certification in anesthesia, surgery, perioperative management, and/or family

  3. Certified in principles of safety/HRO/lean/process or quality improvement
