Job description

The Department of Animal, Dairy and Veterinary Sciences (ADVS) at Utah State University (USU) is seeking applicants for an Assistant or Associate Professor of Dairy Cattle Nutrition who will contribute to the Research (60%), Teaching (35%), and Service (5%) missions of the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences (CAAS). The candidate is expected to develop an innovative, extramurally funded, nationally recognized research program that utilizes both basic and applied research methods to address knowledge gaps and critical needs in dairy cattle nutrition. The candidate’s research program will be strengthened by and will contribute to a strong research base in animal nutrition and related basic sciences within CAAS and throughout USU. The successful candidate should be prepared to establish an independent research enterprise promptly and obtain robust funding support from state, federal, or private entities. 

 

The successful candidate's research program should help improve the efficiency and sustainability of animal production systems in the Intermountain West while also answering mechanistic questions related to dairy cattle nutrition and production. This faculty member will have the opportunity for extensive collaboration with other scientists in the ADVS department conducting research in reproductive physiology, growth biology, animal health, and genetics/epigenetics. Additionally, there are opportunities for collaboration across CAAS and the university, as well as within the two USDA-ARS research stations (forage and range research laboratory and poisonous plants research laboratory) located on the Logan campus.

 

Excellence in teaching is highly valued at USU. The successful candidate will be expected to teach ADVS courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. These courses will be determined based on the department's needs and the successful applicant's expertise. The candidate will be expected to recruit and mentor graduate students in dairy nutrition and will be encouraged to provide students with opportunities in USU’s highly successful undergraduate research program.

 

The candidate will also be expected to be involved in service activities for the department, college, and university as well as external opportunities at the national and international level within their field.
