Job Description

The Registered Nurse (RN) specializing in Behavioral Health provides compassionate and comprehensive nursing care to patients with psychiatric and behavioral health disorders. This role involves assessing patient needs, implementing therapeutic interventions, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to promote recovery and improve mental health outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

• Conducts thorough assessments of patients' mental health status, including psychiatric history, current symptoms, and risk factors for self-harm or harm to others.
• Collaborates with patients, families, and healthcare providers to develop individualized care plans based on the assessment of psychosocial needs, treatment goals, and recovery objectives.
• Administers psychotropic medications and other prescribed treatments, monitoring patient responses and managing medication side effects under the supervision of psychiatrists or other prescribing providers.
• Implements therapeutic interventions and evidence-based practices to address patients' behavioral health concerns, including crisis intervention, de-escalation techniques, and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).
• Provides patient and family education on mental health conditions, treatment options, coping strategies, and community resources for ongoing support and recovery.
• Facilitates group therapy sessions and psychoeducational groups to promote skill-building, emotional regulation, and socialization among patients in a therapeutic milieu.
• Monitors patient safety and milieu management, maintaining a therapeutic environment conducive to healing and recovery while ensuring compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.
• Collaborates with case managers, social workers, psychologists, and other mental health professionals to coordinate discharge planning and aftercare services for patients transitioning to community-based settings.
• Documents all nursing assessments, interventions, and patient responses accurately and comprehensively in electronic health records (EHR) or other documentation systems.
• Participates in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings, clinical case reviews, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance the quality and effectiveness of behavioral health services.

Qualifications:

• Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the state of practice, with a minimum of one year of clinical nursing experience preferred.
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree preferred, or willingness to pursue higher education in nursing.
• Certification in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing (PMHN) preferred or willingness to obtain within a specified timeframe.
• Strong assessment and therapeutic communication skills, with the ability to establish rapport and build trusting relationships with patients experiencing mental health crises.
• Knowledge of psychiatric disorders, psychopharmacology, and evidence-based interventions for managing acute and chronic mental health conditions.
• Ability to assess and manage crisis situations effectively, employing de-escalation techniques and implementing appropriate interventions to ensure patient safety.
• Understanding of trauma-informed care principles, cultural competence, and sensitivity to diverse populations and individual differences.
• Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
• Flexibility to work rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required to provide 24/7 nursing coverage in behavioral health settings.
• Commitment to professional growth and development, including participation in continuing education activities, training programs, and professional organizations relevant to psychiatric nursing practice.
