Berkeley Lab's () Biological Systems and Engineering () Division has an opening for a Senior Research Associate to provide technical and research support for microbial culturing, molecular cloning, and genetic transformations as part of the T-BRSC project. This role will perform molecular biology and microbiological research assignments along with preliminary data analysis.

This position has an anticipated start date of April 15, 2024.

What You Will Do:

• Provide research and technical support to meet project goals and deadlines, including the collection and processing of data along with preliminary data analysis.

• Perform routine molecular cloning and microbiology work such as miniprep plasmids, PCR, gel extraction, DNA assembly, transformation, colony screening, etc.

• Implement cultivation and transformation protocols for non-model organisms.

• Perform physiological experiments with model and non-model organisms and prepare samples for proteomics and metabolomics analysis.

• Perform basic lab duties, including maintaining and purchasing consumables, personal lab bench, and common area organization.

• Perform HPLC and GC analysis to measure metabolite molecules.

• Maintain lab notebook and instrumentation.

• Participate in group meetings and prepare reports.

• Provide guidance to new members of the team regarding general laboratory practices and procedures.

What is Required:

• A Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) in Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or a related field and a minimum of 2 years of demonstrated experience with molecular biology techniques including genomic DNA and plasmid preparation, PCR, DNA gel electrophoresis, restriction digestion, ligation, transformation, gene knockout and integration, colony picking and screening or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Experience with analytical instruments including HPLC and GC.

• Demonstrated experience performing genetic modification on non-model organisms.

• Strong analytical skills including the ability to troubleshoot issues and recommend solutions.

• Demonstrated proficiency with software programs including MS Office Suite, Google Apps, etc.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills including experience maintaining detailed and accurate record-keeping of daily laboratory operations.
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills including the ability to work autonomously and as part of a diverse collaborative team.

Desired Qualifications:

• A Master's Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) in Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or a related field.

• Demonstrated hands-on experience in a chemistry lab with extraction and column purification.

• This is a full time, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay, 13 month (benefits eligible), Term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

• This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

• This position is expected to pay $64,056 - $81,600 per year for job code 381.2, which fits within the full salary range of $64,056 - $99,132 per year. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
