The Manager of Stakeholder Relations, ERCOT, SPP will support stakeholder engagement for AES' extensive portfolio of clean energy projects across the region. Serving as a key representative of AES, this position will manage community and stakeholder relations, fostering positive relationships for both existing and future projects, in their assigned territory. States of responsibility currently include Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota.
This dynamic role requires effective communication and advocacy skills to engage with diverse stakeholders, including community organizations, government officials, public and private institutions, regulatory agencies, and educational institutions. The Manager must adeptly represent AES throughout the region with competence and professionalism, establishing the organization as a leader in clean energy.
The role requires frequent travel to communities where projects are located and occasional travel to regional offices.
P rimary job responsibilities:
Overall
Lead engagement efforts in project communities, including developing and implementing stakeholder engagement plans that align with the company’s positioning and support its development.
Work collaboratively with internal teams such as Development, Permitting, Finance, Operations and Communications to identify, establish, and cultivate mutually beneficial relationships with key stakeholders.
Between 30-50% travel may be required
Stakeholder Engagement & Project Support
Foster and maintain relationships with local elected and government officials, external trade/interest groups, community and other stakeholders.
Coordinate inclusive engagement practices where project’s may involve Indigenous people, this engagement is consistent with the principles contained in AES’ Voluntary Tribal Engagement Policy.
Facilitate and support the incorporation of local stakeholder analysis into market strategy and outlook - ensuring a shared comprehension of the immediacy of the impact of external affairs risks and opportunities on our short- and long-term portfolio goals.
Create and maintainaccurate lists of stakeholders in project areas and assist with documentation of stakeholder interactions through the utilization of our stakeholder relations management tool.
Support project teams by identifying and presenting solutions to community-based development challenges.
As requested by the Stakeholder Relations Manager, supervise the work of any contract community relations professionals and agencies hired to supplement public consultation or community relations outreach within the region.
Support diligenceefforts on potential new projects the AES may seek to acquire into our clean energy portfolio.
Represent AES and/or present at various business, government, and community meetings and events.
Mobilize individuals and organizations to demonstrate support for AES’ renewable energy projects.
Attend and monitor local government proceedings related to projects as needed.
Build and maintainaccurate records of all stakeholder interactions; collect and analyze feedback through various channels; manage and supervise data through AES’ engagement database.
Identify and communicate community/local sentiment, priorities, and concerns to the internal team, ensuring that AES’ messaging is specifically tailored and relevant to the local community.
Community Partnerships & Impact
In alignment with AES’ Social Impact Program, develop a strategy that identifies and builds strategic community partnerships that strengthen positive impact in project communities and support AES’ brand and reputation.
Experience in Justice40 implementation on projects including awareness of Community Benefits Planning and project collaboration in underrepresented communities.
Achieve cross-functional buy-in for partnerships; manage approval and compliance process.
Communications & Events
Provide communications counsel and planning support to AES project teams related to the development of public presentations and collateral support materials specific to key issues and policy or community concerns within the request. This may include research, writing, presentation development, community event staging, and other initiatives as needed.
Work with the communications team to identify and execute local media opportunities.
Monitor social and traditional media, including local media in areas targeted for project development.
Support planning and execution of in-person and virtual community engagement events; including but not limited to, community meetings and site visits. Oversee all event-related tasks, from planning to execution.
Represent AES at various trade organization, business, government, and community meetings and events.
Develop meaningful communication and notification tools best suited for various priorities and stakeholders. (both internal and external)
Draft targeted external communications such as informational handouts, talking points, presentations, and public meeting displays, to bolster local presence.
The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:
Undergraduate degree, preferably in public affairs, external relations, business, communications or equivalent.
7+ years of experience in public affairs, stakeholder relations, community outreach, communications,or similar field.
Experience in the energy sector with a preference for renewable energy experience; or related project siting experience.
Knowledge and experience supporting Green Hydrogen engagement efforts is a plus.
Sharp analytical skills to quickly analyze complex situations, determine key issues and messages, and implement communication programs.
Able to deal with senior management, a variety of external and internal disciplines and manage multiple projects at once, under deadline.
Strong interpersonal skills, including consultation, negotiation, facilitation, risk communication and conflict resolution.
Hands-on, hard-working team player who has a sense of ownership and is eager to support projects from a variety of angles.
Desire to be in the field, engaging with stakeholders in their communities.
Ability to balance priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Comfort working cross-functionally and developing consensus. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Global mentality and comfort with working with people from multiple different backgrounds and cultures.
Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
Proficient with MS Office Suite, QuickBase, Box, Microsoft Teams.
Experience using CRM systems is preferred.
