Wesleyan University invites applications for the Writing Center Director for the Fall 2024 semester.

Job Description

The Director of the Writing Center is a full-time, one semester position. The Director is responsible for teaching one first-year seminar in their area of specialization and a .5 credit tutor training and professional development course. In addition to these teaching responsibilities, the Writing Center Director is responsible for:

• Supervising and mentoring staff of approximately 30-35 undergraduate writing tutors and running a 3-day training for new tutors at the start of the semester.

• On-boarding, mentoring, and supervising the post-bacc Writing Center fellow who works with the Writing Center Director to run the daily activities of the Writing Center including weekly all-staff emails, scheduling, payroll, maintenance of the Writing Center space, maintaining the staff Slack, monthly all-staff meetings, and WCOnline.

• Publicizing, administering, assessing, and supervising the .25 credit Mentor Program that pairs Writing Center staff with interested writers including our first-generation, low-income writing mentor program.

• Collaborating with the Director of Academic Writing and the Associate Professor of TESOL on orientation, programmatic needs, events, and personnel matters.

• Maintaining budget and longitudinal data for the Writing Center and writing an end-of-semester report.

Additional duties, depending on the interests of successful candidate and needs of the Writing Center, might include: publicity, thesis writing support, Writing Center ambassador program, Writing Center social media, workshops with the Office of Faculty Career Development and Center for Pedagogical Innovation, in-class writing workshops, and consultations with faculty about teaching writing.

Minimum Qualifications

Required

• BA

• 2 years experience working at a university writing center

• Commitment to equity and inclusion with particular emphasis on historically bypassed student populations and multilingual writers

• Experience with WCOnline or similar scheduling and data collection programs

Preferred

• Phd in hand, ABD, or terminal degree in field (MFA, etc.)

• 2 years experience teaching writing at the university level

• 1 year experience in writing center leadership position or writing center directorship
