Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Oahu Invasive Species Committee (OISC), located in Kailua, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY: $4,123/Mon.
DUTIES: Collaborates with OISC Public Outreach Coordinator to design, implement, and evaluate community engagement strategies and programs to encourage participation in control of invasive species. Facilitates access permission and creates access plans to direct community management efforts. Maintains records of permits, surveys, contact information and correspondence with property owners. May use databases, maps and other tools to determine survey areas. Creates and delivers responsive educational programs for a variety of audiences. Assists in developing evaluation metrics and measurement tools for outreach campaigns. Designs appropriate and effective messages utilizing social science principles. Assists with various OISC social media channels to ensure consistent publishing of high quality, accurate content. Drives to project worksites. Tracks and evaluates the success of various campaigns and messages online. Collects photos and/or videos at public events. Edits and finalizes staff presentation materials as needed. Responds to and documents community reports and inquiries via in-person contact, email, social media, or phone. Assists crews with invasive species surveys and control efforts.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Communications, Education, Biology, Natural Resources Conservation, Agriculture, or a related field. (Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college and two to four (2-4) years of experience working in communication, outreach, education, administrative work, or similar work involving frequent interactions with the public, may substitute for a Bachelor’s Degree.).
EXPERIENCE
One to three (1-3) years of work experience in public outreach, communications, environmental education, or similar. Experience must include working in natural resources management.
KNOWLEDGE
Familiarity with the ecology, natural history, communities, and culture of Hawai‘i Island.
ABILITIES & SKILLS
Excellent public speaking skills. Excellent communications skills, both orally and in writing. Proficient in editing. Ability to quickly synthesize new information and communicate it to others orally and via written, visual, or other dynamic modes. Ability to produce creative original outreach products. Excellent computer skills with high degree of proficiency in Google Suite applications. Ability to create high quality slide decks and graphic design materials (e.g. PowerPoint, Google Slides, Canva, etc.). Ability to manage large amounts of data with speed and accuracy. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to pass a post-offer criminal background check. Must possess the Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within six (6) month from the date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS
Ability to hike in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions. Able to backpack and lift and carry up to forty (40) pounds unassisted.
POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Communications, Social Science, or Natural Resources-related field. Experience working in Natural Resources Management in Hawai‘i. Deep understanding of and ability to speak knowledgeably about Hawaiian biota and threats from invasive species in Hawai‘i. Knowledgeable about natural and cultural history or agriculture in Hawai‘i. Familiarity with Oʻahu communities. Experience with community-based social marketing (CBSM). Experience with creating video content and using video editing software. Proficiency in ArcGIS StoryMap creation. Familiarity with WordPress. Experience designing, managing, or working on large and complex projects.
