Postdoctoral Fellow Position in Experimental Particle Physics 2023 | Carnegie Mellon University

Carnegie Mellon University

Location

University, MO | United States

Job description

The Department of Physics at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow position in experimental particle physics. The position involves work on the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. The current CMS group at CMU consists of Professors John Alison, Matteo Cremonesi, Valentina Dutta, and Manfred Paulini.

We expect the successful candidate to take part in searches for dark matter in events with large missing transverse momentum (MET), and to improve the MET reconstruction using machine learning (ML). The successful applicant will also contribute to the Phase-2 upgrade of the CMS Level-1 trigger by studying the deployment of ML algorithms for MET reconstruction on field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), to allow for their usage in the trigger. For these projects, the candidate is expected to leverage collaborations within the NSF AI Planning Institute for Data-Driven Discovery, which promotes and facilitates the adoption of AI into a broad range of physics areas. Similarly, collaborations with CMU's Departments of Machine Learning, Statistics, and Electrical and Computer Engineering are highly encouraged.

CMU's Department of Physics is committed to increasing the diversity of its community on a range of intellectual and cultural dimensions, and is part of a College and University that is proactive to include more members of previously under-represented groups. We seek candidates who, through their research and/or service will contribute to the diversity and excellence of our academic community.

A Ph.D. in experimental high energy physics at the time of appointment is required. The position is based at CMU for at least the first two years. Being based at the LHC Physics Center (LPC) at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) is also an option. The appointment is initially for one year and renewable annually, subject to mutual satisfaction.

Applications, including a cover letter, curriculum vitae, publication list and a statement of research interests should be submitted via this Interfolio site. In addition, candidates should arrange for three letters of recommendation to also be uploaded to the Interfolio website. For questions about the position, please contact Matteo Cremonesi at [email protected].

The position is available as soon as possible but remains open until filled. Applications received by March 15, 2023 will receive full consideration.
