FITNESS COORDINATOR
The VCU Recreation and Well-Being (RecWell) Fitness Coordinator is responsible for the administration and management of personal training and fitness floor program areas that align with the mission of RecWell to advance student success by empowering the VCU community to prioritize well-being, connect with others, and learn through play. The Fitness Coordinator supervises personal training staff, and coordinates informal fitness programming, fitness-related and special events, small group, and personal training services. The primary responsibilities of this position encompass a wide variety of project and program-based management, personnel management, financial management and reporting, facility operations, risk management, policy and procedures development and enforcement, and program assessment and evaluation. This position reports to the Assistant Director for Fitness. SS 35311N. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE: Personnel Management (30%)
- Facilitate the hiring and ongoing training, supervision, and mentorship to develop personal training and other fitness staff into more effective, healthful leaders and team members in all aspects of their lives.
- Create opportunities for fitness staff to engage in applied/integrated student leadership opportunities that align with VCU REAL.
- Effectively prepare fitness staff to identify risks and make critically sound decisions that uphold the department's shared values.
- Provide ongoing professional development opportunities for students to increase levels of responsibility, develop new skills, and advance as professionals.
- Effectively communicate department, Division, and University mission, vision, values and goals to staff.
- Ensure consistent and customer service standards are met by creating a culture of customer service for Personal Training staff on the Fitness Floor.
- Ensure compliance with all departmental and University guidelines and procedures.
- Regularly monitor staff time and verify payroll.
- Revise employee training materials and operating manuals annually.
Program Management (60%)
- Lead the ongoing planning, implementation, and evaluation of inclusive, accessible, and welcoming fitness programming, minimizing risk while focusing on fun and positive experiences for participants.
- Participate in the development of department and program area specific strategic plans, goals, and measurable outcomes to guide and evaluate all fitness program activities.
- Work with other RecWell staff to assess and report strategic outcomes.
- Facilitate collaboration with key stakeholders to develop a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to fitness programming that addresses key recreation and well-being issues, such as belonging and connectedness.
- Work with key stakeholders to integrate fitness constructs into academic and other learning environments, potentially instructing courses in partnership with academic departments, including facilitating the American Council on Exercise Personal Training Prep Course twice annually (Fall and Spring semesters).
- Work through the established channels to engage in dynamic and purposeful marketing and promotion of fitness programming through the collaborative development of digital, print, social, and other media.
- Attend fitness programming and special events, conferences, and professional networks to support team activities and develop relationships with peers and other key partners.
- Work with others to develop innovative models that remove barriers to student engagement while ensuring the long-term sustainability of fitness programs.
- Create, revise, and implement standard operating procedures for Fitness Floor, Small Group Training and Personal Training Services.
- Assist with the enforcement of departmental and programmatic policies, procedures, and guidelines with participants using the fitness floor.
Administration (10%)
- Assist in identifying facility and fitness equipment maintenance and housekeeping concerns, mitigating the impact on operations and patron experience.
- Provide responsible and ethical management of resources within designated program area(s), including developing, managing, and reconciling program budgets, and meeting goals for revenue within program areas.
- Ensure compliance with departmental and program area risk management plans that includes staff training, certification requirements, program management, regular audits, emergency action plans, and appropriate documentation.
- Create, revise, and implement standard operating procedures for the fitness program.
- Resolve participant conduct issues according to department guidelines.
- Conduct regular equipment inventories.
- Assist with conducting regular safety inspections of activities, facilities, and equipment and report work order needs to the appropriate person.
- Actively contribute to shared knowledge in this growing field by participating in professional organizations.
- Participate in Department, Division and University-wide events and committees as needed.
- Assist with daily operations of the department as needed.
- Serve as part of the onsite/oncall team, providing regular evening and weekend supervisory support.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required:
- Bachelor's degree; prefer degree in exercise science, kinesiology, recreation, physical education or related field.
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
- Two (2) years of experience in a position requiring similar responsibilities. Time spent working as a graduate assistant or paraprofessional may be counted toward this requirement.
- Knowledge of current practices and standards in strength and conditioning programming.
- National Personal Training certification from ACE, ACSM, NSCA or equivalent.
- Demonstrated experience in all aspects of personnel management and staff development; ability to motivate and supervise staff.
- Demonstrated administrative skills in: budget development and fiscal/statistical management; planning, implementing and evaluating programs; risk management.
- Ability to take initiative, problem solve and meet deadlines.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively.
Preferred:
- Master's degree; prefer degree in exercise science, kinesiology, recreation, physical education or related field.
- Experience working in a campus recreation setting.
- CPR/AED/First Aid Certified.
- CPR/AED/First Aid Instructor Certified.
- Additional training or certification as a fitness instructor.
- Additional experience or certification as a health/well-being coach.
Other requirements:
- Serve as part of the onsite/oncall team, providing regular evening and weekend supervisory support.
- Position coordinates programs that occur in the evenings and weekends, so regular on-site support of such services and occasional contact with students and patrons during such programs is required.
POSITION: This position is a full-time twelve-month University and Academic Professional position. SALARY: $50,000-$52,000
