Crew Lead S011 - 2nd Shift

2nd Shift position with fluctuating hours.

Directs, schedules, plans, performs and oversees skilled utility construction and excavation tasks, including assigning tasks to crew members. Performs and provides guidance in the skilled operation of a wide variety of landscape and construction, maintenance equipment, lawn maintenance equipment, motorized wheeled vehicles, commercial trucks

and tractors exceeding 25,000 lbs. to support landscape and utility construction, general excavation, and snow plowing.

In addition, performs manual labor, which includes shoveling, catch basin cleaning, tamping, litter control, herbicide applications and other similar tasks as assigned. Promptly reports unsafe conditions or damage to campus landscape, equipment or facilities. Answers and responds accordingly to off-shift requests from EMCS, campus customers and Cornell Police during shift.

Provides on the job training by demonstrating proper use of equipment and materials while demonstrating proper methods for accomplishing specific tasks. Assist in planning, scheduling and estimating jobs.

Subject to call-in twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to handle emergencies, especially snow emergencies. Subject to shift changes and extended working hours (including nights, early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays) to meet seasonal work demands. Subject to working in weather related extremes of heat and cold for extended periods. May come into contact with sewage and dead animals. Regular exposure to bees and pollen.

• This position is covered by the United Auto Workers (UAW) bargaining unit. The Step 1 hourly rate of pay for an S11 is $28.32.

Required Qualifications:

• High School diploma or equivalent
• Minimum of six years experience with landscape maintenance, utility construction and related equipment operation, to include a minimum of three years experience operating heavy motorized construction and snow plow equipment (exceeding 25,000 lbs.) and providing leadership relating to landscape/utility
• construction work, materials and equipment.
• Strong interpersonal (oral and written) skills in order to interact with a
• diverse range of people.
• Proven ability to work effectively as a member of a team. A strong customer service orientation while providing a helpful and friendly approach to serving the campus community.
• Is motivated to learn and takes initiative to be proactive.
• Demonstrated experience utilizing independent judgment and problem solving to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.
• Previous working experience reading plans, specifications, manuals, and
• blueprints.
• Experience planning and coordinating work crews required.
• Must have and maintain a valid driver's license; may be required to operate a motor vehicle (your own vehicle or Cornell-owned) to travel to/from job sites.
• CDLA restricted license required or must obtain within 6 months of hire. NYSDEC pesticide applicators license 3A required within one year.
• Must pass a pre-employment drug test and be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Preferred Qualifications:

• AAS in construction technology or landscape operations.
• Formal training in heavy equipment operation, and/or
• construction technologies, helpful.
• OSHA 10 course.
