Job description
Nursing Interventions
- Treat students and staff for illness and injury
- Provide any medically necessary treatments during the school day for students including blood glucose monitoring and Insulin administration.
Student Medical Records
- Maintain up to date student medical records including:
- Health inventories
- Immunization records
- Medication orders
- Any related medical records necessary for providing nursing care during the school day
Individual Health Care Plans (IHP)
- Develop IHP for any students that:
- Have chronic conditions and/or need medical monitoring
- Receive medications during the school day
Medication Administration and Recordation
- Administer student medication as prescribed
- Keep accurate schedules of medication administration
- Utilize SNAP/nursing specific software for recording all medication entries and electronic health records
- Maintain system allowing for quick access to any and all emergency medications that have been prescribed for individual students (e.g., Epipens, Diastat, Nayzilam, injectable medications)
External Communication
- Communicate with physicians, parents/guardians, other care providers on an ongoing basis to meet the students’ health and safety needs
- Consult with local and state health department professionals regarding communicable disease concerns when issues arise
- Monitor influenza surveillance programs when appropriate
Staff Training
- Coordinate training of classroom and related staff on the proper administration of emergency medications for field trip days, community outings, and/or job sites
- Train staff about student's IHP that have complex medical conditions
- May be required to provide training for CMT licensure
- May be required to coordinate renewal class for CMT license renewal bi-annually
- Train designated staff to check blood glucose levels for diabetic students
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing
- Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland
- Pediatric nursing experience
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent organization skills
- Accepts direction/feedback and demonstrates ability to make changes accordingly
- Computer skills related to common office tasks such as email, conducting internet searches, and using MSOffice (e.g., MSWord, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Flexibility with regard to daily routine and responsibilities
- Experience working with individuals with special needs preferred
- Experience in a school setting preferred
