Departmental Overview
The Transportation Sustainability Research Center (TSRC) was formed to study the economic, social, environmental, and technological aspects of sustainable transportation. It is housed at the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California, Berkeley.
This position entails gathering, analyzing, and assessing detailed project information for highly technical projects to implement hydrogen fuel cell technologies in marine ports, transportation systems, and the power sector. Supports project efforts for analysis of lifecycle assessment of fuels production, delivery and use; supports technical and economic assessments of complex hydrogen and fuel cell production and use scenarios; supports proposal, white paper, and potential journal publication efforts.
This is a 50% FTE, 2-year contract position with the possibility of extension and/or conversion to career. Application Review Date

Responsibilities
- Carefully vets internal hydrogen system project proposals for completeness, deficiencies, and strengths/weaknesses.
- Provides technical and engineering support to the overall project team including technical-economic analysis.
- Conducts in-depth technical interviews with private sector groups to gather and assess key information.
- Gathers, analyzes, prepares and summarizes information for inclusion in a large-scale project proposal to public sector sponsors.
- Prepares engineering and permitting assessments and documents for hydrogen system technology field tests at the UC Berkeley Richmond Field Station.
- Attends virtual and in-person project related webinars and meetings.
Required Qualifications
- Detailed knowledge of energy systems, especially including hydrogen and fuel cell systems.
- Strong understanding of engineering principles including the laws of thermodynamics and electrical principles.
- Proven ability to understand project development and permitting requirements (e.g. NFPA and CEQA) and how to efficiently navigate permitting requirements.
- Good organizational and decision-making abilities and ability to prioritize competing work assignments.
- Effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
- Ability to work in a collaborative manner and to identify challenges and barriers and recommend resolutions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's or higher degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering.
- Extensive knowledge of hydrogen and fuel cell systems.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $85,800 to $122,000 annually, prorated based on FTE. This 50% FTE, 2-year contract appointment is eligible for benefits.
