Job description
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
As Director of Athletics:
Program
- articulates and implements the philosophy of the interscholastic and intramural athletic programs
- maintains an Interscholastic Coaches Handbook to communicate philosophy and policies
- in concert with the Assistant Athletic Director for Scheduling, develops an appropriate schedule of interscholastic athletic competitions and practices for teams
- appoints and evaluates coaches and interviews candidates for the Choate faculty
- in concert with the Assistant Athletic Director for Scheduling, coordinates with the Director of Studies and other colleagues to minimize calendar conflicts with other areas of school life and manage those conflicts collaboratively as needed
- facilitates professional development opportunities for coaches
- plans and leads meetings of the School’s interscholastic coaches 2–3 time per year
- meets with head coaches each season and with sub-varsity coaches at regular intervals
- establishes strategic goals for the recruitment of student-athletes with Admission and head coaches and ensures adherence by coaches to policies and timelines regarding the recruitment, rating, and support of candidates during the admission process
- oversees preseason athletics in the fall, in collaboration with those managing the opening of school
- manages details of the intramural athletic program, including staffing and schedule
- supports the Athletic Department Associate with appropriate planning for spring break preseason trips in collaboration with the Director of Global Engagement.
- coordinates special events with appropriate administrators and staff as needed
- assists the Dean of Faculty in the implementation of all athletics-related policies and procedures
Communications & Public Relations
- represents the athletic program and the Department to the School’s administration and faculty
- communicates the needs of the program to the Board of Trustees as requested
- represents Choate Rosemary Hall externally to Athletic Directors and Heads at our peer schools and among our established affiliations (e.g., Founders League, Eight Schools Association, WNEPSAA, NEPSAC)
- corresponds with parents, alumni, and friends of the School as necessary
- works with the Development Office to advance the School’s athletics-related priorities
- presents athletics-related content at school meetings
- supervises our sports information efforts to promote Choate Athletics internally and externally
Departmental Management
- holds overall supervisory responsibility for the Department of Athletics, including direct supervisory relationships with both administrative faculty and staff (currently two Assistant Directors of Athletics, the Head Athletic Trainer, the Coordinator of Athletics Operations, and the Head Equipment Manager), some of whom supervise others in the Department
- oversees operations in the Athletics Office, the Equipment Room, and the Sports Medicine Center
- hires, trains, motivates and evaluates administrative faculty and staff associated with the Department
- manages the Department of Athletics budget
- implements a duty schedule for athletic administrators on game days
Facility Management
- in concert with the Assistant Athletic Director for Scheduling, coordinates the maintenance and operations of all athletics-related physical plant with Facilities
- develops strategic plans for the expansion, maintenance, and/or renovation of athletic facilities as needed
- coordinates with the Events Office and others regarding the use of athletic facilities by outside groups
- works with the Director of Operation as needed to ensure the safe management and use of all athletics-related physical plant
As an administrative faculty member:
- serves as a caring and responsive adviser to a group of students
- teaches one course per term in one of Choate’s academic departments and coaches in Choate’s athletic programs, or takes on equivalent responsibilities as determined by the Dean of Faculty or Head of Student and Academic Life
- contributes to the co-curricular life of the school in accordance with personal expertise and school needs
- supervises students in residential houses as assigned or take on other student supervisory duties
- engages in ongoing professional growth and development as directed by supervisors
- takes on other duties as assigned by the Dean of Faculty or Head of Student and Academic Life
Prior experience :
- bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree strongly preferred
- at least five years of relevant work experience
- direct experience with athletic administration is strongly preferred
- significant coaching experience, preferably in a school context at the high school or college level
- prior experience in independent schools strongly preferred
- must have or be willing to obtain and maintain CPR certification
