We are seeking an Associate Network Administrator to join our team in Rockville, MD.
This is a Hybrid Position.
The Associate Network Administrator will work with the network and facilities operations team, in support of a federal healthcare enterprise environment, including medical research and administration. The administrator will execute standardized and consistent operational tasks to ensure reliability, availability, performance, and security of the enterprise network infrastructure and services. The administrator will support daily operations, maintenance, and administration of facilities. This will include assisting with dedicated uninterruptible power, climate control, and control of physical access to the servers in a centrally supported fully managed environment that is monitored 24x7.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Monitor and maintain network infrastructure and services; utilizing best practices to include ITIL and Lean IT principles.
- Participate in the installation, configuration, and testing of equipment.
- Operate according to defined network standards and procedures.
- Provide tier one support for network service-related issue/items across the entire enterprise. Escalate problems to tier two, engineering, and vendors as appropriate.
- Promote IT security throughout the network including through the operation of network access control, firewalls, etc.
- Understand and adhere to documentation including reference architectures, diagrams, SOPs, etc.
- Assist in the execution of upgrades, enhancements, and new solutions for network services.
- Interface directly with end users and with other IT support teams. Support day-to-day operations of the server rooms, data centers, and LAN closets.
- Assist in Data Center consolidation activities by relocating equipment, planning, assessing the impact of redeployed equipment, and assisting with inventory control.
- Monitor server room capacities including, but not limited to, power capabilities, physical space available, and cooling capacity.
- Manage facility capacity appropriately sizing loads in server racks considering available cooling and power.
- Monitor the facility environment to include power quality, environmental conditions, equipment status, and personnel access.
- Provide consultation to include developing a Program of Requirements (POR) for new data centers, server rooms, LAN closets, and buildouts of office and lab space to support IT infrastructure.
Work Experience:
- 2 - 5 years of experience understanding and/or ability to learn as many network fundamentals as possible, including but not limited to switching, routing, DNS, DHCP, IPv4, IPv6, subnetting, network segmentation, VLANs, QoS, NAT, firewalls, and load balancers.
- Experience operating:
- network switches and routers, preferably Extreme Networks.
- firewalls, preferably Palo Alto.
- load balancers, preferably F5.
- DHCP/IPAM, preferably Infoblox.
- Network monitoring and management tools such as Extreme Networks XMC, SolarWinds, and Cacti.
- Experience working in data center and LAN closet facilities, including power, cooling, racks, cable plant and cable management.
- Experience in tier one problem identification, diagnosis, and resolution of network problems.
- Experience in network monitoring and management.
Job Skills:
- Working knowledge of endpoints on the network, including workstations (Windows, OS X, Linux), printers, phones, servers, etc.
- Understanding and ability to follow industry-proven methodologies, preferably ITIL, Lean IT
- Focus on customer service over technology.
- Ability and willingness to communicate effectively and appropriately.
- Ability to operate efficiently in the execution of standard operating procedures.
- Ability to independently prioritize and organize assigned tasks.
- Ability to support some after-hours and weekend work, including on-call duties.
- Ability to follow technical guidance from team members and IT vendors.
Education:
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience preferred.
Certifications, Licenses and Registrations:
- Network Professional certifications, preferably Extreme Networks, CompTIA, or Cisco. Certification preferred
- Must be able to obtain and maintain an OMB Public Trust clearance.
Communication Skills:
- Excellent oral and written communications skills.
- Solid ability to interface, inspire and motivate at various levels of the organization.
- Ability to convey technical information to non-technical individuals.
- Demonstrated experience communicating effectively across internal and external organizations.
Travel:
Environment Requirements:
- Mainly sedentary; in an office environment
- May be required to lift up to Fifty (50) pounds.
- Flexible in working extended hours.
